Eric M. Schlegel is a research astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where he is responsible for ensuring data quality for the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. He has also worked at NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center.

Informative Book - Well written, engaging, and learned from it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I thoroughly read it and made sure I understood what was being addressed. I found the structure of it interesting, and easy to follow, and the occasional jokes were well placed. To the untrained individual, I think this book will help in understanding X-ray Astronomy and other important concepts in the field. I did know a fair amount of what was discussed in the book, but I also did not know a fair amount - which I then I learned of through analyzing. If there were a second edition, I would definitely read it!

Also, the original book has a section of colored images, and if you have this book and it does NOT have these colored figures when the author says they ARE colored figures, then you do not have the actual copy but rather a photocopied one. Make sure you do have the actual printed book so that you can see the colored figures - trust me, you will see the detail much clearer otherwise you will miss some important visual information. There are quite a bit of figures in this book (which are significantly helpful - especially the x-ray data) and I have noticed that the photocopied version significantly degrades the detail (both the colored and b&w figures). So make sure you have the right one!

Good book on observational x-ray astronomy

This is an excellent book on x-ray astronomy. The author, a working scientist in the field, explains how x-ray astronomy slowly matured through the many satellites developed. The author took great care in explaining the details of the science and egineering of the various x-ray probes and the many intricacies of the x-ray astronomy itself. He slowly takes the reader to the depths of spectroscopy and then to the mysteries of the universre, stars and satr clouds. I enjoyed the reading.

detailed enough to be interesting

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author did not shy away
from trying to explain the physics in an understandable way
and succeeded. He also very clearly proved his points with
detailed examples. I did think the book was a little disorganized but overall highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Tom Richardson is Vice President and Chief Scientist at Flarion Technologies, Inc., New Jersey. He was awarded his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1990 from M.I.T., after which he worked for 10 years at the Bell Labs' Mathematical Sciences Research Center. He is the inventor of over 20 patents.

R�diger Urbanke is a professor in the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique F�d�rale de Lausanne, Switzerland (EPFL). He was awarded his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1995 from Washington University, after which he worked for Bell Labs until joining the faculty at EPFL in 1999. He is currently on the board for the 'Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory' series for the IEEE.

Useful only as an additional reference book

This book was required reading for my graduate level advanced coding topics course. My first issue with the text is its clunky notation. Expressions and equations are written in unusual fonts. Super and sub scripts appear awkward, and the authors seem to introduce their own notation for convolution. Besides the cumbersome typesetting, the book has a somewhat scatterbrained approach for organizing material.

This book is essentially about LDPC codes, almost exclusively. The book is good as a side reference, perhaps to supplement a more organized and clearly written text such as Lin & Costello, but not as an introductory text, or a text one would use for clarifying concepts. The text by Todd Moon is a far superior reference.

Overall, I do not recommend this book. I've not gotten much use out of it all semester.

A very good book on iterative decoding

This book is your "one stop shop" to learn all about low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and iterative decoding. This seems to be the primary intention of the authors since they don't talk about anything that isn't related to LDPC codes or iterative decoding. This book is not meant as an introductory course in coding theory. It is very good for an advanced course in iterative decoding and as a good reference material for research.

Pros:
1) The material is self contained.
2) Detailed references to technical papers.
3) A complete picture of the material is provided (including all the "fine print" mathematics and stuff).
4) Rigorous proofs are provided for most of the important results.

Cons:
1) Slightly cumbersome notation (especially in chapter 4). E.g., there are four different functions denoted by the letter 'a' in four different scripts (fonts) in one section!
2) The ebook version (not the Kindle version) has DRM and is intended to be viewed only with Adobe Digital Editions. Digital Editions does not render the mathematical expressions correctly, making the DRM version unusable.

An Outstanding Work by Two Experts on the Topic

Dr. Richardson and Urbanke have made some important controbutions on the theorical analysis of message-passing decoding on LDPC code in special, code on graph in general. I read this book with the hope to pick up some analysis skills on iterative decoding. In general, I understand that experts in an area does not necessary the best persons to write a good and worthy textbook, especially one with hot topic and title like "'Modern' Coding Theory" ... if you know what I mean.

To my surprise, this is a well-written book that provides me a lot of background on the topics far beyond my expectation. Allow me to use many nice approaches of introduction chapter to explain why I like this book.
1. After warmup defintions and exmaples, the authors bring in Gilbert-Varshamov lower bound and Elias upper bound for minimum Hamming distance of code. Then they use Chebyshev's inequality, the concept of theshold decoding and Gilbert-Varshamov bound to prove the existence of non-zero rate code of zero error probability. (Initially I was quite surprised by assigning those fundamental bounds as problems, but after few hour's effort on the problems to make myself feel comfortable with the results, I started to appreciate author's approach to stay on their main themes, anaysis of capacity approaching codes, and let you learn by working out your parts. Anyway all the proofs can be found from several excellent classical coding textbooks or even Google).
2. Another neat approach by define Shannon's random ensemble, define MAP (maximum a-posteriori), ML (Maximum likeihood) and APP (a-posterior probability) use Baye's rule to show their relations. Then use random ensemble's uniform code and statistic independent codewords properties, helped again by Chebyshev's inequality and theshold decoding to prove Shannon's channel coding theorem under binary symmtric channel. This is the cleanest proof of channel coding theorem I ever see. The authors again use "threshold" to prove capacity. The concept of threshold is introduced by Gallager in LDPC decoding, can be extended to Turbo code decoding.
3. Use Elias upper bound to prove that opitimal minimum Hamming distance code is bound away from channel capacity, used to argue bounded distance decoder is not sufficient.
4. Introduce Elias generator ensemble and Gallager's parity ensemble, prove binary linear code achieve channel capacity.
5. Use error exponent bounds of block code and convolutional code to quantify decoding complexity and delay. Comment that a similar theorem for iterative decoding is the most needed open question.
6. Use Hamming code over binary erase channel and Venn diagram to preview iterative (local) encode and decode. Show iterative decoding is not optimal in some case. However argues iterative decoding is a low-complexity (inverse of coding gap) decoding scheme to approaching capacity.

In general,

In summary, this book is an outstanding work by two experts on the topic. Highly recommended to anyone who feel serious on the topic.

Outstanding republication of seminal Sch�nberg pieces!

Of the two pieces reprinted from Universal and Peters respectively in this volume, it's the former - the tone poem "Pell�as und M�lisande" (Op.5), using the same subject matter as Debussy's opera - that's the more accessible. It follows logically upon "Verkl�rte Nacht" (Op.4) and "Gurrelieder" (no opus number) both in terms of Sch�nberg's evolution as a composer from his home-base of Late-Romanticism to Expressionism (a sort of intensified Romanticism) and also in terms of his gradual departure from tonality. This departure didn't happen overnight (though it still was quick! - from "Verkl�rte Nacht", which is still quite tonal although it modulates a lot, to the "Songs of the Book of the Hanging-Gardens", where complete atonality is achieved, it took only 7 years!). However, once it happened, he never (with one exception - that of a piece commissioned by a school orchestra in the USA) returned to any true sort of tonality.

This earlier piece is still tonal, but it already is more dissonant and less key-anchored compared to the other two works mentioned already, notably Part 1 of "Gurrelieder" (excluding the Song of the Wood-Dove) as well as "Verkl�rte Nacht". There are fewer traditional cadential-type passages - even at the ending one has no true "V-I" progression of any sort to establish the final d-minor key. Those that remain are ever-more overlaid with (chromatically-linked) dissonance and less pre-cadential preparation so as to make key-establishment less and less definitive (let alone secure!). [Even in the first two pages of the score one can't say that the tonality of d-minor is truly established at all!]

Apparently it was this element that excited Sch�nberg just as much as inverting the whole idea of music to emphasise dissonance over consonance: whereas the traditional idea is to resolve dissonances into consonances, atonality utterly reverses that flow (with Sch�nberg, even minor dissonances eventually resolve into stronger discords)! It is this very idea of in essence turning the entire concept of music upside-down that is the essence of such works as virtually everything after Opus 14. So it is with the Three Piano-Pieces of Opus 11, the "Songs of the Book of the Hanging-Gardens" (Opus 15), and - in our case - the Five Orchestral Pieces of Opus 16. Here not only any sort of consonance and tonality is utterly abrogated: the music becomes virtually athematic to boot...

[As a curiosity (if I recall correctly): when Opus 16 was published initially, it was suggested to Sch�nberg that the individual movements have titles bestowed on them (not given in this publication). The result are the following "non-titles": 1) Vorgef�hle (Premonition); 2) Vergangenes (What's Past); 3) Sommerfarben (Summer-Colours); 4) Peripetie (Perpetual-Motion?); 5) das Obligate Rezitative (The Obligato Recitative).]

In all events, there's positively no better bargain in getting to know these pieces than to have this score, which reproduces the definitive editions of both pieces, in hand!! Most unreservedly recommended!!!

You basically pay for an add

I wanted to buy a book that will teach me something new but instead paid for solicitation to pay more money for seminars, coaching etc...., I guess that's where the money is.
The reviews are excellent and it's very deceiving (calling it "bible" together with the reviews make you think that you will get pure information).

Sorry But You Can Skip This One!

Unfortunately this is not the bible of wholesaling. Lots of generalities and very little, or any, specifics. Example: When Than writes about mailing lists to use in your direct mail campaigns he never tells us where to secure these lists. And so it goes throughout the book. For $18 is a skip. Where do I get a refund?
