Stalking the Red Bear: The True Story of a U.S. Cold War Submarine's Covert Operations Against the Soviet Union, by Peter Sasgen

Thrilling submarine espionage and an inside look at the U.S. Navy’s “silent service”

Stalking the Red Bear, for the first time ever, describes the action principally from the perspective of a commanding officer of a nuclear submarine during the Cold War—the one man aboard a sub who makes the critical decisions—taking readers closer to the Soviet target than any work on submarine espionage has ever done before. This is the untold story of a covert submarine espionage operation against the Soviet Union during the Cold War as experienced by the Commanding Officer of an active submarine. Few individuals outside the intelligence and submarine communities knew anything about these top-secret missions. Cloaking itself in virtual invisibility to avoid detection, the USS Blackfin went sub vs. sub deep within Soviet-controlled waters north of the Arctic Circle, where the risks were extraordinarily high and anything could happen

Chapter One

A DEADLY GAME

U.S. NAVY COMMANDER Roy Hunter, captain of the USS Blackfin, heard the sibilant beat of ships' screws and, through the raised periscope, saw the masts of hull-down Soviet warships. Electronic Signals Measures (ESM) intercepts of radar and radio transmissions had confirmed the presence of several ships and ASW helicopters as well as the high-frequency polarized radar the Soviet helos employed for detecting exposed submarine periscopes and masts.

As he lowered the periscope, Hunter ordered, "Lower all masts. All ahead two-thirds. Make your depth two-five-zero feet. The officer of the deck has the conn."

Hunter announced his intention to track the contacts via passive sonar, then ordered the officer of the deck (OOD), a young lieutenant, to station the section .re-control tracking party, the team tasked with keeping tabs on a target's position. Rigged for red, the control room, with its lit up .re-control consoles and other vital instruments, had a spectral look.

"Conn, sonar; active sonar bearing one-three-zero," advised the sonar supervisor. "Frequency five kilohertz; ten-thousand-yard scale. Designate Sierra Ten."

The OOD toggled his microphone switch. "Conn, aye."

The report from sonar meant that the Soviet warships had shifted to high-powered active sonar, a sure sign they were searching for a submerged intruder.

"Officer of the deck, make your depth four-five-zero feet," ordered Hunter.

Greater depth would provide an extra layer of invisibility, like pulling a blanket over their heads. Since making sonar contact with the ships, Hunter had been thinking, Avoid counterdetection. In other words, don't let the Soviets know you're there. If they do, you lose. Hunter was confident he could give them the slip— unless they got lucky, and so far it didn't seem likely.

The Soviets relied on a rigid and highly codified ASW doctrine, what they called the "struggle against submarines." It was more a theory than a proven tactic. The Sovs, with their inferior passive sonar, often gave up searching for submerged U.S. subs simply because they were too quiet to detect. Yet when using active sonar they often regarded submerged contacts as anomalies caused by scatter or thermal gradients, or reverberations caused by shallow water. Moving west, the Sov ASW team's active sonar slowly started fading. So far so good. It seemed as if they'd lost the scent . . .

"Conn, sonar; picked up a three-hundred-hertz tone. Bearing two-nine-zero, drawing right, designated Sierra Eleven. Classified as a submerged Type II." Sonar had a submerged Russian submarine contact, perhaps a Charlie or Victor nuclear attack sub.

Hunter's submarine, moving silently, was nothing more than a hole in the ocean. Not so the Soviet sub.

"Come left to two-nine-zero," the OOD ordered.

The helmsman confirmed the order; the American sub turned northwest.

A moment later the OOD ordered, "Attention in the attack center. We'll maneuver to solve the target's course, speed, and range." Turning to Hunter, he asked, "Captain, should I try to get lined up for an ASPL?"

"Not yet."

Making absolute sound pressure level recordings of a Soviet submarine's noise levels was high on Holystone's intelligence-gathering list. First, though, Hunter had to determine what this one was up to and whether the contact intended to maintain the steady course and speed essential to making accurate ASPL recordings.

"Conn, sonar. Based on the tonal upshift, the range rate is a hundred yards per minute and closing."

"Conn, aye."

Hunter settled down to wait. After several minutes the OOD ordered, "Come right to course zero-two-zero."

"I have Sierra Eleven on course zero-one-zero," reported the .re-control coordinator. "Speed ten, range forty-one hundred yards." A touch over two miles. "Got a good solution on him for an ASPL—"

"Conn, sonar!" The sonar supervisor broke in on .re control; the urgency in his voice was unmistakable. "Heard a transient, a thump, from Sierra Eleven."

Hunter, his mind working like a computer, reviewed a picture of the setup in his head. He "saw" the approaching enemy sub in relation to his own sub, which he'd maneuvered to gain an advantage on the intruder. He was certain that the Soviet sub hadn't heard the maneuver, so how . . . ? It didn't matter how—that thump could only mean one thing, that he'd opened the outer doors on his torpedo tubes—

"Conn, sonar—a single ping from Sierra Eleven!"

Hunter heard it, too, on the UQC underwater phone at the periscope stand, a shrill pulse of pure sound energy .red by the Soviet sub at Hunter's sub. The ping meant that the Russian had painted the Americans with active sonar, a sign he was about to fire a torpedo at them!

Before Hunter could issue orders, sonar broke in: "Torpedo in the water! Bearing three-one-two!"

Hunter didn't hesitate; instinct and training took over. "I have the conn! All ahead flank! Right full rudder! Come to course one-three-five!"

Caught by surprise, Hunter at first refused to believe what he'd heard. No Soviet sub would ever .re a torpedo at an American sub in peacetime. There were rules in the espionage game both sides were playing, and if they were violated it could start a goddamn war—a nuclear war! His gut tightened. Everything suddenly ground to a halt. There was nothing more he could do, no way to avoid disaster. Like the watchstanders frozen at their stations, he heard the incoming whine of the torpedo's up-Doppler props, counted down the seconds to impact, and—

Lights snapped on in the control room.

A moment later a voice boomed from a speaker: "You're sunk, Hunter."

Chagrined, Hunter and his .re-control team blinked, looked around the attack center simulator's mocked-up control room, and then exchanged glances with each other. Hunter, at the periscope stand, blew through clenched teeth. It had only been an exercise, but goddamn it! The team running the simulation had slipped one in on him.

A week of circling, weaving, chasing down multiple targets, avoiding detection, and now getting sunk had left him exhausted. Still, better to make big mistakes in the attack teacher than up in the Barents Sea where a real mistake could kill you, not just bruise your ego. In the simulator at the U.S. Navy's submarine school in New London, Connecticut, with its perfect scenario reconstruction, a guy could learn from his mistakes and live to tell about it. After all, here it was Americans against Americans. In the Barents it would be Americans against Soviets. Hunter lit a cigarette and thought of all the things that could go wrong up in the Barents Sea—and how it would be his job to make sure they didn't.

Nice Memories
By submariner in Arizona
I also served on a 637 class attack submarine and agree with most of the sentiments of the prior reviews. I did find the book fun to read and very informative. It created a great source of memories for something I experienced almost 40 years ago as a junior nuclear trained officer. I feel that the author did a great job of surmising what was happening on the Russian side of the equation. This was something we did almost everyday while on patrol. I am giving this book to my friends who really want to know what we did back in the day . As the former CO said, it wasn't flashy but it was an interesting job. I am very happy that I purchased this book. The author did a nice job.

Interesting, but short with more detailed history over multiple missions desired.
By Greg Hooten
As many reviewers have stated this is about the Cold War history of submarine data gathering both visual and electronic. Fact based with some liberties taken for conversational fluidity, it is a good and quick read. The quick is my major issue with this work. While the book lists as 330 pages, only about 2/3 are part of the direct story. The last 1/3 is 3 Appendix that generally rehash 3 WW2 sub commander missions breifly discussed in the main text. There is also an extensive glossary, and a very extensive bibliography. A lot of this seems to be to fill out the length of the book.

Some of my other issues with the books is the disjointedness of some of the descriptions. For example, one sub commander's debrief says that he moved his submarine under a Russian surfaced submarine. No reasons was given until later in the book when it was noted that there was a desire to get images of the hull of Russsian ships and submarines to understand the extent of their technology. So, while I was left wondering until late in the book why a sub captain would risk his crew, career, boat, and an international incident for something that seemed more like counting coup.

Brings back good memories!
By zonacruiser25
Having served on both Permit (Thresher) class and Sturgeon class boats, this sure brought back my West-Pac memories! The locations are different (Atlantic vs Pacific) but the story is so identical. My patrol was 81 days out of Pearl and we did get periscope liberty to look at Russia. Peter Sasgen did an excellent job of telling the story of life on patrol. Sturgeon class boats are still some of the finest boats the US has ever placed in service. This book will truly give the reader a very accurate view of life on the boat. Being enlisted, I did not have it as good as the officers and CO but we also had a fantastic skipper and he demanded the highest level of performance from all of us. If you are curious about submarines and their roll in our national defense, do yourself a favor and read Stalking the Red Bear!

The Triple Agent: The al-Qaeda Mole who Infiltrated the CIA, by Joby Warrick

A stunning narrative account of the mysterious Jordanian who penetrated both the inner circle of al-Qaeda and the highest reaches of the CIA, with a devastating impact on the war on terror.

In December 2009, a group of the CIA’s top terrorist hunters gathered at a secret base in Khost, Afghanistan, to greet a rising superspy: Humam Khalil al-Balawi, a Jordanian double-agent who infiltrated the upper ranks of al-Qaeda. For months, he had sent shocking revelations from inside the terrorist network and now promised to help the CIA assassinate Osama bin Laden’s top deputy. Instead, as he stepped from his car, he detonated a thirty-pound bomb strapped to his chest, instantly killing seven CIA operatives, the agency’s worst loss of life in decades.

In The Triple Agent, Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter Joby Warrick takes us deep inside the CIA’s secret war against al-Qaeda, a war that pits robotic planes and laser-guided missiles against a cunning enemy intent on unleashing carnage in American cities. Flitting precariously between the two sides was Balawi, a young man with extraordinary gifts who managed to win the confidence of hardened terrorists as well as veteran spymasters. With his breathtaking accounts from inside al-Qaeda’s lair, Balawi appeared poised to become America’s greatest double-agent in half a century—but he was not at all what he seemed. Combining the powerful momentum of Black Hawk Down with the institutional insight of Jane Mayer’s The Dark Side, Warrick takes the readers on a harrowing journey from the slums of Amman to the inner chambers of the White House in an untold true story of miscalculation, deception, and revenge.

Bob Baer Reviews The Triple Agent

Robert Baer is the author of two New York Times bestsellers: Sleeping with the Devil, about the Saudi royal family and its relationship with the United States; and See No Evil, which recounts Baer's years as a top CIA operative. See No Evil was the basis for the acclaimed film Syriana, which earned George Clooney an Oscar for his portrayal of Baer. Baer writes regularly for Time.com and has contributed to Vanity Fair, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. He is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on the Middle East.

I’ve never read a book like this, a detailed and compelling postmortem of an intelligence failure. In a driving narrative Warrick tells the story of how the CIA came to suffer its worst loss ever.

Since Khost I’ve taken more than a passing interest in how precisely the tragedy came about, how more than a dozen CIA operatives let themselves be caught in an ambush like this. Needless to say, my ex-colleagues could talk about nothing else in the months afterwards. But no one could give me the detail that explained it. Warrick’s finally done it, better than any CIA “damage assessment” could ever hope to.

The story of Khost has much wider significance than a tragic event. Warrick paints a picture of a CIA obsessed with technology – drones, iris scans, intercepts. No one at Khost spoke the local language, no one set foot out of base, and the officer in charge had no real field experience. She knew nothing about Afghanistan or Pakistan. Yet she was not only put in charge, she was handed the CIA’s first mole inside al Qaeda - and put in charge of overseeing the assassination of al Qaeda’s number two, Ayman al Zawahari.

The Triple Agent is not only the best book out there on the CIA’s hunt for al Qaeda, it’s the best book on post-9/11 CIA, bar none. Read it.

Review

—The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Insightful and riveting.... Mr. Warrick adds a wealth of new detail to a narrative that reads like the best spy fiction."
—The Washington Times

"The Triple Agent is a spy thriller like no other. Never has such a giant intelligence debacle been chronicled this vividly, this intimately. Riveting and harrowing, laden with deception and duplicity, it is a remarkable, behind-the-curtain account of the CIA’s darkest day in Afghanistan."
—Rajiv Chandrasekaran, author of Imperial Life in the Emerald City

“Absolutely first-rate, breakthrough reporting.”
—Bob Woodward, author of Obama’s Wars

“The Triple Agent is a superlative piece of reporting and writing. Joby Warrick manages to take the reader inside the CIA, Jordanian intelligence, and al-Qaeda. His intimate portraits of intelligence officers and the terrorists they stalk are unforgettable. The Triple Agent is one of the best true-life spy stories I have ever read.”
—David Ignatius, columnist for the Washington Post and author of Bloodmoney

“A startling and memorable account of daring, treachery, and catastrophe in the CIA’s war against al-Qaeda. The deadly buzz of unmanned drones, the fanatical drive of a suicide bomber, and the desperate hopes of the intelligence agents at outpost Khost are drawn together in a powerful and fast-paced story of our time.”
—David E. Hoffman, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Dead Hand

“The Triple Agent is by turns harrowing and heartbreaking, fascinating and frightening. Joby Warrick takes the reader deep inside the CIA’s biggest disaster since September 11, a monumental blunder that allowed an al-Qaeda mole, carrying a thirty-pound bomb, into the agency’s highly secret, frontline outpost along the Afghan border with Pakistan. The blast left seven agency employees dead and many questions unanswered, questions that Warrick skillfully answers in a tale that reads like a thriller and stretches from the dusty back alleys of Waziristan to the plush executive floor at Langley.”
—James Bamford, author of the bestselling The Puzzle Palace, Body of Secrets, and The Shadow Factory

Outstanding Journalism
By Director's Cut
I eagerly awaited the release of this book (on July 19th) and promptly devoured it in two days when it finally popped into my Kindle. I was not disappointed. The author has, in my opinion, assembled an outstanding account of the events leading up to (and subsequent to) the tragic terrorist attack that left several CIA Officers, security personnel, a Jordanian Intelligence Officer, and an Afghan driver dead. Joby Warrick seems to have done an incredible amount of research and interviews for this book, all of which are appropriately cited/footnoted. This book also serves as a great overview of CIA HUMINT and Predator drone operations along the Af-Pak border region and within Pakistan's ungoverned tribal areas. His overview of the Taliban commanders and Haqqani Network personnel was clear, concise, and reminded me of the thorough, yet user-friendly text of Steve Coll's Pulitzer Prize-winning Ghost Wars. It is easily the best account to date of US intelligence and military activity in this turbulent region. Warrick also did a commendable job with introducing the reader to the backgrounds and personalities of both the bomber as well as his victims; you will feel like you know them all and will be appropriately outraged and saddened by this operation's outcome. We as readers also get to be flies on the wall for the happenings at CIA Headquarters and at the White House, which places a proper perspective on the entire ill-fated operation and its aftermath. Finally, Warrick's book serves as a way to critically think about all the factors that led up to this attack. Was there too much oversight from CIA's bureaucracy or not enough? Were there too many people involved in this operation or too few? Was CIA too drunk on the excitement of this double agent operation or was their enthusiasm for killing Ayman Al-Zawahiri appropriate and spot-on given the circumstances? I'll keep my opinions to myself -- there's already been enough second guessing on this case -- but if nothing else, this book will make you sincerely grateful for the efforts of those on the front lines of the battle against Al Qaeda and will make you painfully aware of the sacrifices they and their families make. Thank you, to all who serve and thank you, Mr. Warrick, for an outstanding journalistic work.

Well written, well researched, and very moving
By Desert Diplomat
If you enjoyed "Ghost Wars," "The Looming Tower," and "The Bin Ladens", you'll want to add this to your collection. Warrick dives into extraordinary detail about the events leading up to the attack (and, about the attack itself), given the fact that the book is relatively short - just over 200 pages. I read it this weekend after hearing his recent interview on NPR and was very impressed with both the writing and the research. Yet, this is more than just another book for policy wonks and intelligence geeks. This book is as much about the people on both sides of the battle as it is about the battle itself, and that's its true strength. Warrick gives us an amazing window into the policy making and operational details leading up to the tragic event, but the book is really about the brave officers from the CIA and Jordanian intelligence playing a deadly game of chess against the malevolent forces of Al-Qadea and the Taliban. Warrick's very moving account of the death notifications and funerals makes this book a real tribute to the fallen. Too often books of this nature focus on indicting administrations and assigning blame. Warrick takes himself out of the book and makes it about the people and the operation - a tough thing to do for many authors in today's partisan and political climate.

This book is excellent.

A Bad Ending for a Good Story
By Retired Reader
Perhaps the best way to review this book is to state up front what it is not: it is not a scathing critique of CIA or the U.S. Intelligence Community. Those who buy it expecting to be inflamed by a stream of criticisms of CIA officers and trade craft will be disappointed.

So what is the book? It is a careful compilation of the events, actions, decisions and personalities that ultimately culminated in the tragedy at Camp Chapman (Khost). Warrick has built a somewhat breathless, but engaging narrative that describes in some detail how a string of seemingly unrelated events build with inevitability of a Greek Tragedy to a horrendous conclusion. Warrick followed what can be called the Bob Woodward style of reporting. That is he reports what is happening without passing judgment on any of the decisions, personalities or actions involved. Indeed one of the more attractive elements of his narrative is that he treats the late Jennifer Matthews with dignity and respect along with a good deal of sympathy. He does the same with CIA `targeters' like Elizabeth Hanson. He also treats Matthews' murderer Humam al Balawi with equal respect and dignity. This will undoubtedly inflame the legion of real and self-declared counter-terrorism `experts' who plague the Inner Beltway of D.C. as well as the many armchair foes of Islamic extremism. Yet the first step in developing any rational counter terrorist strategy is understanding who terrorists are. Warrick should be commended for his balanced and fair approach to what is still a highly emotional subject.

Although Warrick scrupulously avoids second guessing and judgments of any sort, his account does provide a good deal of evidence that CIA has not dealt with its counter-terrorism mission particularly well. For example his informants appear to conflate the Taliban movements with al Qaeda, treating both Taliban and al Qaeda targets as terrorists (a basic misunderstanding of Pashtun Culture). Also there is no evidence that Warrick presents that CIA analysts made any effort to understand the structure or motovation of either grouping.

Now all that being, said being fair and balanced is not the same as being factually accurate. Warrick, like Woodward, was entirely dependent on his informants, many of whom undoubtedly provided him with self serving accounts that may or may not square with the facts. So this book is good start a sorting out the events that ultimately ended in explosion at Khost, but it will take years for the full truth to be uncovered.

Reseas:

Un libro emocionante. [...]
New York Review of Books

Consigue su objetivo de rescatar la reputacin de Humboldt de la grieta en la que l y muchos otros escritores y cientficos alemanes cayeron despus de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
The Independent

Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. In North America, his name still graces four counties, thirteen towns, a river, parks, bays, lakes, and mountains. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether he was climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infected Siberia or translating his research into bestselling publications that changed science and thinking. Among Humboldt’s most revolutionary ideas was a radical vision of nature, that it is a complex and interconnected global force that does not exist for the use of humankind alone.

Now Andrea Wulf brings the man and his achievements back into focus: his daring expeditions and investigation of wild environments around the world and his discoveries of similarities between climate and vegetation zones on different continents. She also discusses his prediction of human-induced climate change, his remarkable ability to fashion poetic narrative out of scientific observation, and his relationships with iconic figures such as Simn Bolvar and Thomas Jefferson. Wulf examines how Humboldt’s writings inspired other naturalists and poets such as Darwin, Wordsworth, and Goethe, and she makes the compelling case that it was Humboldt’s influence that led John Muir to his ideas of natural preservation and that shaped Thoreau’s Walden.

With this brilliantly researched and compellingly written book, Andrea Wulf shows the myriad fundamental ways in which Humboldt created our understanding of the natural world, and she champions a renewed interest in this vital and lost player in environmental history and science.

Atrapante y bien escrito muestra la vida y la obra de un adelantado que nos dej un legado de concepciones cientficas y especialmente de responsabilidades con la naturaleza. Un alegato totalmente vigente.

Heer Waris Shah: Translated by M.Munawar Butt, by Sayyed Waris Shah

This is an English translation of the Punjabi epic poem Heer Waris Shah. The poem has remained popular among Punjabis for almost three centuries. The author believes that non-Punjabis would also enjoy this work, because of its many merits. It is a heart wrenching romantic tragedy, a faithful portrayal of an alien culture, and an allegorical work with potent religious meaning. It should also find acceptance among those Punjabis, and their children, who cannot read the original, Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi, version.

Great Punjabi love poem !
By Fulvio Lonardo
Heer is an epic poem, long known and loved by people living in Punjab, a region now divided between India and Pakistan, but virtually unknown in the West.
Thanks to the translation of Dr. Butt it can now be appreciated in all its beauty and inspirational force by all English speaking people. It constitutes a welcome addition to the literature on romantic love, fitting squarely in the same league of evergreens, like Romeo and Juliet. It testifies cogently to the unity of the human race and the universality and everlasting nature of the human heart and its stirrings, its heights and its debasements alike.
The poem tells a love story in which the sublime heights of love and beauty are epically pitted against the dark forces of hatred, pettiness and jealousy. Just like in Romeo and Juliet, love and life succumb in the end, in a drama that is heart rending, but unavoidable, since the highest and most sublime love always take the lover into the reaches of death. Love knows no limits, no other value is above it, not even one’s own life. In another example of extreme love, the cross of Christ, self-immolation is made for the sake of love of others. Both witness to the vicinity of love with death, with the power of archetypal, epical imageries.
The association with epics is indeed justified in the case of Heer by its style, betraying its genesis as an oral poem. The story , kept alive with a constant infusion of new characters and changing scenarios, betrays the hand of consummate story tellers, used to keep the attention of a live audience. Not unlike the Homeric poems, Heer circulated in oral form for a long time, before being set into writing.
The characters are indeed epic heroes that remain etched in the mind of the reader, both inspiring and challenging, with their example of sublime love, and the purity of their quest for each other’s embrace.
However, this embrace is not a merely “romantic” one. It is the metaphor for a quest for transcendence and total surrender of the self, or in other words, of man’s quest for God. It therefore recalls to mind, in addition to Romeo and Juliet, that other love poem long interpreted in the Christian tradition as a metaphor of man’s mystical union with God: the Song of Songs of the bible. In Heer, the geographic-cultural setting indeed suggests a happy union and mutual interbreeding of the two great religious traditions of the region: the Muslim and the Hindu. The stress on mysticism and quest for transcendence typical of the latter fits squarely here with a Sufi (re)interpretation. The notes provided by the translator provide an invaluable help to the reader in navigating his way through the metaphors used in the text, as well as in understanding specific details that would be lost to a westerner.
In conclusion, one should be thankful to the translator for allowing access to this text, a hidden gem now unveiled and shining, for all to admire its poetic beauty and be inspired by its eternal truth.

Richly detailed overview of modern evolutionary thought
By GPC
I have used all three earlier editions of this text for my undergraduate 'Evolution' course (I am a college Professor of Biology) and have witnessed the various changes made over the years. The new version has updated much of the information on molecular evolution; the authors should be commended for their very thorough literature review. With the veritable explosion of research into evolutionary phenomena, this must be difficult indeed! The initial chapter on HIV still remains a wonderful introduction to your typically "human oriented" undergraduate and serves to generate interest in the topic early on. The phlogeny/evolutionary tree chapter was moved earlier to the "Introduction" part of the text; not sure why this was done. It was also nice to finally see mention made of reaction norms in the 'Adaptation' chapter (at last!), but there are still no examples of phenotypic plasticity from the vast botanical literature. The 'Evolution and Human Health' chapter is excellent for the medical student. Rather oddly, the important topic of speciation is near the book's end (Chapter 16) and glosses over the many fine examples from the plant evolution literature (polyploid speciation is virtually ignored, except for two paragraphs on p.159). My students are fascinated by the 'evolution of wheat' story, but don't look for that example of speciation here.

My primary complaint with this, and the preceding editions, is still the overwhelming amount of extraneous detail. How I wish I could use my editorial hand on this one! Does an undergraduate student really need over 20 pages on linkage disequilibrium? Are the final details of QTL mapping really necessary at this level of student education? Do we really need 4 pages on the 'fallacy' of the bell-curve (interesting advanced topic, but...) Also, there is an over abundance on phylogeny and systematics (useful for the future molecular systematist, but probably just confusing to the general biology major).

In any event, a great book, a little overwhelming, but well written and free of errors...I'll probably order the lastest (4th) edition anyway for the next 'Evolution' class...

Top notch evolution text for the undergraduate student
By Alan R. Holyoak
EVOLUTIONARY ANALYSIS (2nd ed) by Freeman and Herron hits the mark for an evolution text for the undergarduate student. It's not so thick that it's intimidating, but the contents cover the basics of evolutionary biology without being watered down.
The authors address topics of current interest (e.g., the evolution of HIV in Chapter 1) in drawing the student into the conversation about what evolution is, how it happens, and how you can demonstrate that it is happening.
Major sections of the book include the following:
1) An introduction to evolution: the HIV story, evidence for evolution, natural selection...
2) Mechanisms of evolutionary change: mutation, genetic drift, genetics, etc...
3) Adaptation: sexual selection, kin selection, social behavior, life history factors...
4) The History of Life: mechanisms of speciation, reconstructing evolutionary trees, origins and evolution of life through human evolution...
5) Current Research in Evolutionary Biology: development and evolution (a field that's really gaining momentum these days), molecular evolution, evolution and human health...
The authors touch all the important bases in this introductory text on evolution. The organization of material is logical, the tone is professional without being overbearing, there are many understandable examples, and the illustrations are excellent. Because of those factors, this new book appears to be a great text to teach from. There are wonderful reference texts out there about evolution, but most of them are not easy to teach or learn from. This book, however, helps students to learn, and provides ample material for instructors to use.
This is now my top choice for a textbook in evolution. This book is definitely worth 5 stars!
I hope this review was helpful to you.

Worth the price
By CJ foote
Looking at the price of this book you might precieve it as a bit expensive but don't be decieved. If you are taking an evolution course or just want to know about evolution, this is the easiest and most comprehensive read you can get. It has comprehensive chapters with page and chapter summeries and loads of examples. It made my course more enjoyable having it. If you're taking a course with this book, buy it. If you're taking another evolution course that deals with many concepts of evolution and even touches on the mathematics of genetics.....buy the book and read it.
