SIX FOOT-PLUS OF RUGGED, UNSMILING MALE STOOD THERE…

Cage Buchanan hated her. The proud rancher might have hired Belle Day out of sheer desperation, but she was determined to help heal his injured daughter. Now here she was, installed at the Lazy-B Ranch, trying not to respond to this ornery, overbearing, incredibly arousing man.

Cage was at the end of his rope. What else explained inviting a Day to live under the same roof? His daughter, Lucy, was Cage's first priority, but with her sexy therapist around, it was hard to focus on daily chores. What would it take to turn passionate enemies into lovers for life…and, together, make a real home on the ranch?

Love this series!
By AReader
Belle Day accepts a job as a live-in physical therapist to the daughter of Cage Buchanan. Cage suffered a loss in his past and has held a grudge against Belle's family for years. Having someone he considered the enemy under his roof bothered him..especially when where he really wanted her, was in his bedroom.....I was excited to hear that this was being released. Fans of the Men of the Double C series fell in love with the Clay family, which Belle became a member of when her mother married Squire Clay. This book was wonderfully written and was not lacking in any way. My biggest dissapointment is the only Clays mentioned by name, besides Squire, were Tristan and Sawyer. The best books written in this series were the stories of Jefferson, Matthew and Daniel, and not to see these characters mentioned by name was dissapointing. Although this book is not in the same league as "Stay", it is a worthy addition to this series and a must read.

Meh...
By Aynee
The story of Belle Day and Cage Buchanan was, well, a bit meh... Take it or leave it, really. I have to say, so far the post-'Men of the Double C' series by Allison Leigh has not lived up to the first five books. Seems to be going through the motions at this stage.
No spoilers: I liked Belle - she has problems and unresolved issues but she's taken those emotions and channeled them into becoming an underpaid therapist (aka good heart, little superannuation). Recently the subject of scandal, she's fled her day job to go work with Cage Buchanan's daughter out on a ranch somewhere near the Double C. The process by which this arrangement has been organised is never explained to my satisfaction; but whatever, this is a romance novel, so I'm prepared to suspend my disbelief. Anyway, so Cage was quite annoying. He's got major issues with Belle's family, with his ex-wife (who's depicted as pure caricature of evil, grasping, non-maternal ex-wife), with relating to his daughter, with the nearby townsfolk, with everyone. The only thing that saves him is that he's hawt, apparently. Luckily, he's able to get over all of his considerable emotional problems and social interaction dysfunctions by falling in love...
So, in the end, 'home on the ranch' was OK, not fab, not terrible. If you're wanting to find out what happens to all of the Clay family (and extended family) members, then read it, you get to see the rest of the family briefly, including Squire, Belle's mum, Clay sons, etc.

Davis (Girls' Poker Night) offers a darkly humorous take on starting over in New York and working with "the Elizabeths," Sarah Miynowski (Milkrun) tempts fate (and an on-again-off-again boyfriend) and Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez (The Dirty Girls Social Club) considers how different the words lady and woman are when paired with cat. Girls' Night In features stories about growing up, growing out of, moving out, moving on, falling apart and getting it all together. So turn off your cell phone and curl up on the couch; this is one Girls' Night In you won't want to miss.

From Publishers Weekly
The third installment (the first to be published in the U.S.) in a British-originated series, this uneven anthology of stories by chick lit's bright lights showcases some engaging voices. Many of the selections, however, lack focus and shape, and while most begin energetically, more than a few fizzle before ending abruptly. Notable exceptions include "Cat Lady" by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez (The Dirty Girls Social Club), in which a woman trying to embrace her inner spinster ("Dear self: If you are still single and haven't had one good date in the preceding two years... [s]ave yourself a future of humiliation and too much makeup and realize one important truth: You are now a cat lady") finds unexpected romance. In "New York" by Jill A. Davis (Girls' Poker Night), a woman recovering from a breakdown finds her niche and a second chance for success in magazine publishing. Premonitions by a psychic roommate in "Know it All" by Sarah Mlynowski (Milkrun) help the story's narrator finally make a decision regarding her on-again off-again boyfriend. Some big names disappoint, including Jennifer Weiner (Good in Bed) and Anna Maxted (Running in Heels). The anthology supports an excellent cause—a percentage of the proceeds go to the humanitarian organization War Child—but it's not consistently gratifying as entertainment.

From Booklist
Originally started in the UK, the Girls' (and Boys') Night In collections gather together hip fiction for the twenty- and thirtysomething sets. The U.S. version collects 21 stories from such popular chick-lit authors as Meg Cabot, Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, Isabel Wolff, Anna Maxted, and Lisa Jewell. In Cabot's "Party Planner," Charity, an event planner at the New York Journal, plans a bang-up company party that goes disastrously awry, though her efforts don't go unnoticed by one handsome supervisor. Sophie Kinsella's "Changing People" brings an old boyfriend back into Sarah's life via a friend's new business scheme. In Sarah Mlynowski's "Know It All," Shaun's psychic roommate allows her to thwart fate's attempts to hook her ex-boyfriend up with a friendly redhead. Jennifer Weiner's "Good Men" revisits Bruce Guberman, the feckless ex-boyfriend of her heroine in Good in Bed (2001), before the pair called it quits. Packed with stories from today's hottest authors, and with proceeds going to the charity War Child, this collection is a must-read for chick lit's many enthusiasts. Kristine Huntley

Check out some potential new reading material!
By M. M. Murray
The only person I have read is Jennifer Weiner and the reason I bought the book. I of course read that story and the Cat Lady story by Valdes-Rodriguez because I love cats! These stories were ok, but not as good as I expected. I will give a brief run-down of all the stories, just like I did with another short story chick-lit book-Girls About Town.

1. Party Planner-Meg Cabot-4 stars-This was pretty funny. Not especially well written, but funny non-the-less, told through emails.

2. Traveling Light- Carole Mathews- 3 to 3.5 stars- Was ok, but not memorable.

3. Cat Lady- Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez- 3.5 stars- Again just ok. A woman who writes notes to herself, suddenly finds herself in need of a cat. The writing of notes to your future self though was clever.

4. Changing People- Sophie Kinsella- 4 to 4.5 stars- I really did like this one. I have been meaning to read some of her stuff and she has graduated to the top of my list.

5. New York- Jill Davis- 2 stars- Kind of pointless, not engaging or funny. Glad when it was over.

6. Revenge- Emily Barr- 4 stars- Maybe it's the evil streak in me, but I did like this one. I know she didn't mean to do it, and what she had planned seemed fairly harmless, but you just never know what can go wrong.

7. Here Comes Harry- Jessica Adams- 1.5 stars- Did not care for this one. Again kind of pointless, not engaging, not especially well written and not funny. Skip it!

8. Know it All- Sarah Mlynowski- 5 ++++ stars- I absolutely loved this one. I was actually laughing out loud. The ending was perfect when she finally came to the realization she did. I suggest reading this first, middle and last to get you through a lot of the not so great ones.

9. In Agony- Isabelle Wolff- 3 stars- This started out slow, but had a good ironic ending.

10. Dating the Enemy- Lauren Henderson- 1 star- I did not like this one at all, obviously, with the star rating. Too Sex in the City, without any of the wit.

11. From This Moment- Megan McCafferty- 3 stars- This started off too slow (I could have done without all the driving around), but the ending was good and had a good story line.

12. What Goes Around- Louise Bagshawe- 4.5 stars- Another good revenge story!

13. Rudy- Lisa Jewel- 1 star- Pointless, pointless, pointless!!!

14. The Truth is Out There- Marian Keyes- 4.5 stars- I thought this was cute and clever. Another one to add to my list.

15. Here We Are- Linda Curnyn- 1.5 stars- I did not like the story or how it was written.

16. Siren Songs- Stella Duffy- 3 stars- It was ok, but not great. Wasn't banging my head against the wall praying for it to be over like the 18th one.

17. The Marrying Kind- Anna Maxted- 2.5 stars- It was ok, but did not add anything to my life, or cause me joy in anyway.

18. Don't You Know Who I Am- Adele Lang- 0 stars- I am hoping this was supposed to be some tongue in cheek kind of story, but it didn't work for me, and was more pointless and time-wasting then any other story I have read.

19. Good Men- Jennifer Weiner- 3.5 stars- Although the reason I bought the book, I was just so-so on the story. It was written well, but I got confused on the characters and who was doing what and why.

20. Dougie, Spoons, and the Aquarium Solarium- Jenny Colgan- 3 stars- Again, I feel like a broken record...it was ok, but not great.

21. Acting Strangely- Chris Manby- 3.5 stars- This turned out to be a cute story, but it just barely passes my "It was ok" baseline.

The few stories that are excellent are worth buying the book for, especially since it also benefits a charity.

Great Collection of Amazing Authors
By Caroline P. Hampton
"Girls Night In" is a really great collection of short-stories by some of the most talented and successful women's authors in today's market place. I was eagerly anticipating the book that would tie me over until some of my very favorite authors published a new book. With great stories from Jennifer Weiner (Good In Bed / In Her Shoes / Little Earthquakes), Sophie Kinsella (Shopaholic Books/ Can You Keep A Secret?), Lisa Jewell (Thirty Nothing / Friend of the Family), and Anna Maxted (Getting Over It / Running in Heels / Behaving Like Adults / Being Committed) I knew that I wouldn't be disappointed. And I wasn't.... This collection is a great anytime read that you can pick up and put down without losing your place and the flow of the book. That's what's so great about short-story collections. You can read what and how much you want.

With the proceeds going to charity - this is a great chance to read something amazing and do some good at the same time. Give it a chance --- you'll be really happy you did.

Cheers!

A Great Chick Lit Collection not to be missed!
By ChickLitGirl
Not only is this collection of short chick lit stories by many of the best authors around, but when you buy a copy, the proceeds go to the "War Child" agency, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children who are victims of war. Some of the authors who have written short stories for this collection are Jennifer Weiner, Sarah Mlynowski, Meg Cabot, Lynda Curnyn, Anna Maxted, Chris Manby, Lisa Jewell, Lauren Henderson, and more. With such a great author line up, who can resist this book? I sure couldn't!

Good Men by Jennifer Weiner explores the male perspective of a well-known character from the novel "Good in bed". Know it All by Sarah Mlynowski was a very interesting story. Shaun has a new roommate named Dee who seems to be psychic. Dee keeps seeing visions of Shaun's recent ex-boyfriend meeting a beautiful readhead. So what does Shaun do? Appears at the place they are supposed to meet and prevent it from taking place. Very interesting results take place. I enjoyed this story about letting go and moving on. In Agony by Isabel Wolff is about Jane, an Agony Aunt with problems of her own she can't solve. New York by Jill Davis is about a week in the life of Anne, a new employee at a glamorous magazine in New York City. Traveling Light by Carole Matthews is a story about Kane and Alice, two people who meet on a train journey and fall in love.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg - there are so many great stories in this book! 21 in all, each story carefully crafted by our favorite chick lit authors. Don't miss this one! This book is one of the September releases from Red Dress Ink.

Modern Epidemiology, by Kenneth J. Rothman, Sander Greenland, Timothy L. Lash Associate Professor

The thoroughly revised and updated Third Edition of the acclaimed Modern Epidemiology reflects both the conceptual development of this evolving science and the increasingly focal role that epidemiology plays in dealing with public health and medical problems. Coauthored by three leading epidemiologists, with contributions from sixteen experts in a variety of epidemiologic sub-disciplines, this new edition is by far the most comprehensive and cohesive text on the principles and methods of epidemiologic research. The book covers a broad range of concepts and methods, including epidemiologic measures of occurrence and effect, study designs, validity, precision, statistical interference, and causal diagrams. Topics in data analysis range from Bayesian analysis, sensitivity analysis, and bias analysis, with an extensive overview of modern regression methods including logistic and survival regression, splines, hierarchical (multilevel) regression, propsensity scores and other scoring methods, and g-estimation. Special-topics chapters cover disease surveillance, ecologic studies, social epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, genetic and molecular epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, and meta-analysis.

This is an excellent book (5 stars for content)
By Gradient - IRC
This is an excellent book (5 stars for content), but this edition, which is described as "Third Edition, Mid-cycle revision" and dated 2012 appears to be the exact same text as the 2008 Third Edition (3 stars for unclear product description). The only difference is that this product comes with online access to the e-book version and "additional resources". The only added resource I could find was errata - and this should be available to anyone who purchased the 2008 book anyway. The publisher should make this information clear so customers can make informed buying decisions.

An absolute necessity for Epi students
By mgianfra
If you're an epidemiologist (or studying to be one), this is definitely a resource you need to have on hand. I've found it useful in studying for my PhD qualifying exams, and also as a reference in teaching students. It is the "go-to" whenever there is a question at hand.

"Baby Rothman" is better
By Jonathan
Book is dense. Instructors have recommended another version, "Epidemiology: An Introduction" by Rothman, instead. Nicknamed "Baby Rothman," it is a shorter, easier read containing all the main concepts.

Modern Families: Parents and Children in New Family Forms, by Susan Golombok

Modern Families brings together research on parenting and child development in new family forms including lesbian mother families, gay father families, families headed by single mothers by choice and families created by assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation and surrogacy. This research is examined in the context of the issues and concerns that have been raised regarding these families. The findings not only contest popular myths and assumptions about the social and psychological consequences for children of being raised in new family forms but also challenge well-established theories of child development that are founded upon the supremacy of the traditional family. It is argued that the quality of family relationships and the wider social environment are more influential in children's psychological development than are the number, gender, sexual orientation, or biological relatedness of their parents or the method of their conception.

Review
"This book would be most beneficial to any professional working systemically or for any professional working with more contemporary family form to better understand how that family form works in order to parent well and to be aware of where potential conflicts may arise."
The Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (acamh.org)

"For years, a basic premise was that the more a family deviated from the traditional, two-parent, heterosexual family, the more the child's psychological well-being was in jeopardy. Golombok addresses a more elemental question by asking how the parenting children in new families experience actually differs from that found in traditional families. Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals, [and] general readers."
Choice

"... Modern Families: Parents and Children in New Family Forms reviews the newer research focused on families created through assisted reproductive procedures or lesbian-headed and gay-headed families. The book includes well-written introduction and conclusion chapters and six chapters that review research on various family formations. For readers with a college vocabulary, [Golombok] does an excellent job of describing each study, the results and the limitations. The last chapter does a particularly good job of summarizing the findings and pulling it all together, and it should be required reading for any professionals who work with these families."
PsycCRITIQUES

"Modern Families is a landmark publication, a succinct state-of-the-art review, and is highly relevant reading for researchers in developmental psychology or family studies and for students in these fields. Policymakers, and indeed parents or want-to-be parents of children brought up in de novo or planned lesbian or gay families, will also want to read this rich and inspiring book."
Fiona Tasker and Victor Figueroa, Journal of GLBT Family Studies

Invaluable guidebook and reference book for research on same-sex parenting and families formed through assisted reproduction
By Ron Dayan
With controversies arise around the issue of gay parenting, surrogacy, and other new family formations, people are quick to voice an opinion or point to anecdotal evidence. But luckily there is a growing body of research on the topic. Professor Golombok from the Centre for Family Research at Cambridge University is one of the pioneering researchers in the field, and this book is the definitive compilation of the work she and her colleagues from several other prestigious academic institutions have done so far. She makes an insightful distinction between "modern" (or "new") families (new forms chosen to adjust to new circumstances and parental configurations) and "non-traditional" ones (that result from relationship breakdown and reformation). I highly recommend getting this especially if you are a current or future gay parent, a member of a family that benefitted from assisted reproduction technology, or if you are involved in these areas professionally. It is an informative guidebook and the ultimate reference book for research on same-sex parenting and families formed through assisted reproduction. It also provides important suggestions for additional research in some of the population groups that have not yet been studies systematically. The book is very well written and accessible to all readers, not just in academia.
