However, simulation can also be used not just for assessing the qualities of inference techniques, but also directly for obtaining inference in practice from empirical data. Various advanced inference techniques have been developed which incorporate simulation techniques. An early example of this is Monte Carlo testing, which corresponds to the parametric bootstrap technique. Chapter 6 highlights such techniques and presents a few examples of (semi-)parametric bootstrap techniques. This chapter also demonstrates that the bootstrap is not an alternative to MCS but just another practical inference technique, which uses simulation to produce econometric inference. Each chapter includes exercises allowing the reader to immerse in performing and interpreting MCS studies. The material has been used extensively in courses for undergraduate and graduate students. The various chapters contain illustrations which throw light on what uses can be made from MCS to discover the finite sample properties of a broad range of alternative econometric methods with a focus on the rather basic models and techniques.

He was appointed an Adjunct Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1999, and became a full-time faculty member in 2001. Since 2011, Dr. Rincon-Mora has also been a visiting professor at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He has published 140 papers in scientific publications, written eight books, and has more than 26 commercial power chip designs. Dr. Rincon-Mora is an IEEE Fellow "for contributions to energy and power integrated circuit design" and an Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Fellow. His research is on the design and development of silicon-based integrated circuits (ICs) that draw and condition power from tiny batteries, fuel cells, and energy-harnessing generators to supply mobile, portable, and self-sustaining devices like wireless microsensors for biomedical, consumer, industrial, and military applications.

Beautiful, but heart-wrenching

I feel like J.R. Rogue has stolen my heart from my chest (OUAT style) and has been squeezing it since the moment I started reading this.

I don't think this is a poetry book I'll be revisiting, because it hurt to read. It was beautiful and very well written, but also raw and painful. The words have burrowed into me and I feel haunted.

I definitely recommend this one, and I'm anxiously waiting to be able to order a couple of physical copies of her books because the e-books are not enough. I'm not sure if I'll be ordering a physical copy of this one or not, because I don't know if I could manage reading it again. I'm glad that I did read it, but it was not easy, and I think it might have been the most difficult poetry book I've ever read, but in a good way. Not the themes, but because of the execution of the poetry, that is.

Let me tell you where it hurts, it hurts within the pages of this short book of poetry. I've never rushed to write a review as quickly as I needed to with this book. It begged to be written while the emotions were still fresh. JR Rogue should be proud of Tell Me Where it Hurts. From the moment of reading her dedication, I knew I was going to love this book: "For the Caged Birds. If I can sing, so can you." It evokes emotions I had buried and most times would rather forget. I, too, was once a caged bird. I've never had tears in my eyes reading poetry before, perhaps because some of these words hit me on such a personal level. There is often so much unnecessary pain in childhood, even more if the child's innocence is not nurtured. My heart hurt reading these poems. It hurt for the struggles I've been through, but mostly, it hurt for the author. Poems with this much raw sadness and heartbreak can only be written from personal experience. You have to know pain to write pain. For that, I am saddened.

While the title tells the reader what they're getting, what is left out is the healing that can be brought through this book. There's something to be said about being vulnerable and sharing our hurts. The world tells us we have to be happy all the time, to slap on a smile and act like everything is fine, even when it is not. When it doesn't work, there's medication to fix your problem. What if it was acceptable to share sadness? By sharing, we are lifting the burden of pretending. It's exhausting to pretend everything is perfect, it often makes the pain worse. It's ok to not be ok sometimes. When Jen Rogue shares her experiences, she is sharing comradery. I dare to say, this little book could save lives. It is exponentially more than a simple book of poems. It shows victims of abuse they are not alone, no matter what kind you have suffered, or from whose hand. This book needs to be read, shared, and given to women to help their hearts heal.
Thank you, Jen, for sharing the deepest parts of yourself for the well-being of others. You are a brave woman. I will forever hold your words close to my heart. I thought Rouge couldn't be beat, but I should have known better.

Ray Campbell Smith is a prolific and versatile professional painter who specialises in the watercolour medium. More than forty one-man shows have been held, many in the wide-ranging list of galleries which regularly exhibit his work. His work is represented in many collections in the UK and abroad. As well as contributing regularly to leading art magazines, he gives lectures, demonstrations and criticisms to art groups. Ray is on the advisory panel of the Society of All Artists in the UK. He has appeared on TV on several occasions, once painting a landscape in the company of Mary Nightingale, and he was recently voted Artist of the Year by the Society of All Artists.

In the mold of The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal

The structural layout of Alexandra's book very much resembles Tal's classic, "The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal." Kosteniuk's book is, like Tal's work, an autobiography. There is much prose (normally at the beginning of each chapter). She starts at her childhood, and takes the reader right up to (and a bit past!) her 2008 World Championship match. Many game fragments are sprinkled throughout each chapter, as well as a substantial number of full-length, annotated games. Alexandra's writing is easily accessible to players of every skill level, whether they be young, old, beginners or masters. I found that she mixed the number of variations and explanations evenly. Since Alexandra typically plays a slashing, aggressive brand of chess, the games are never boring! Also, the translation (sometimes a problem in chess books) made the English read naturally (shout out to the translator, fellow Michigander Jim Marfia!!). She drops various tips and tricks of the Grandmaster trade along the way. The Women's World Champ clearly invested alot of time and effort into writing this book. I wonder if she'll write another some day?

So to sum up, "Diary of a Chess Queen," is a very interesting read, and you probably won't be disappointed if you purchase it.

The education of a grandmaster

The Russian school of chess... the Russian chess tradition... these terms did not really mean much to someone who was not a chess professional or a chess connoisseur, even if I had followed chess for so many years and admired figures like Tal or Kasparov... it was not until I read Kosteniuk's book that I came to see what those notions really mean: a life dedicated to chess in the context of a whole society that is passionate about chess, where chess training and practices are held in the highest steem and the time spent studying chess is not constantly questioned as an absurdity. Kosteniuk's very enjoyable book brought these insights and many others that make me appreciate chess even more... for that I am very grateful to her and wish her continued success!!

It is not necessary to be an expert at chess to thoroughly enjoy this book. For those with a passing interest in the sport, the book is filled with photos of Alexandra and many other world renowned players. Alexandra takes the reader inside the political world of chess and tournament play. The book is also a travelogue of the places she has traveled to compete. And for those who want to get out a chess board and recreate the games Alexandra has played to become champion, there's plenty of them also - with commentary by Alexandra. Alexandra is a tireless proponent and campaigner for chess, especially for the young. She has held numerous simuls all over the world to promote the sport. Even against the Russian parliament. And the book is not ghost written. Alexandra tells us that every jot and tittle of the Russian edition was written by her personally. It's worth your time.
