About the Author
Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was born of Jewish parents in Prague. Several of his story collections were published in his lifetime and his novels, The Trial, The Castle, and Amerika, were published posthumously by his editor Max Brod.

Mark M. Anderson is Professor of Germanic Languages at Columbia University. He is the author of Kafka’s Clothes and the editor of Reading Kafka. He has written widely on literary modernism and has edited and translated contemporary Austrian writers Ingeborg Bachmann and Thomas Bernhard.

Susan Bernofsky is the acclaimed translator of Hermann Hesse, Robert Walser, and Jenny Erpenbeck, and the recipient of many awards, including the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize and the Hermann Hesse Translation Prize. She teaches literary translation at Columbia University and lives in New York.

This is my first Kafka novel. I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's very strange - I like a certain amount of that in stories. I'll come back to revise this review after I'm done reading it. I'm curious to see how this turns out.

Iftach Spector’s family immigrated to Palestine at the turn of the twentieth century. His father and mother both served in the Palmach, Israel’s early clandestine commando force, which led to the death of his father during World War II when Spector was seven months old. After the Sinai War of 1956, sixteen-year-old Spector knew he wanted to be a fighter pilot and looked forward to his induction. He started his pilot training in 1958, and two years later had his wings in the Israeli Air Force.

After the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973, during which he commanded a squadron of fighter-bombers, he continued his service to his country for three decades, rising to head the Israeli Air Force’s Training and War Lessons Section and eventually becoming its chief of operations. During these years he downed twelve MiG fighters (plus three more as “unit score”), making him one of the aces of jet aviation.

The 2003 “Pilots’ Letter,” the famous statement by IAF pilots refusing to take part in unlawful military activities, caused Spector and twenty-seven other pilots to be labeled “refuseniks.” Spector disputed the term—does refusing to commit war crimes make one a refusenik? Nevertheless, it brought Spector’s military career to an end, while also making him one of the most compelling and celebrated defenders of the conscience of the Jewish state. About the Author

Iftach Spector is a retired Brigadier General of the Israeli Air Force. Since 2001, he has been active in the Movement for Disengagement from the Palestinians. Spector’s first book, A Dream in Black and Azure (1992; never translated into English), won the Sade Literary Award, given to him personally by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He has a BA in history and Middle East Studies from Tel Aviv University and a master’s in political science from UCLA, both with honors. General Spector lives in Ramot-HaShavim, Israel.

Informative and Interesting

Iftach Spector is an Israeli air force ace and one of the best Mirage fighter pilots. He set up a Phantom squadron and also returned to the air force to set up its 1st F-16 squadron. He has flown almost all aircrafts and even Helicopters in the IAF inventory.
This book is all about the organization of the Israeli Air Force and the wars it fought.

I was surprised to find no details on the incident of defection of an Iraqi MiG-21 to Israel and its subsequent evaluations by the IAF. The pictures published in this book are too limited. One would expect more rare pictures of the Author, Israeli Mirage IIIs, the F-4s, the F-16s.
Overall I would rate this book 4 out of 5. A must read for all those interested in Air Combat and Operations of the Isreali Air force. The incident of a dogfight with a Syrian pilot is described so nicely it will hold your breath and would hardly let you keep the book down.

Compelling and informative

This is a book is much more than the story of a fighter pilot: it is social history, political commentary and a love story. Spector shows himself in the whole, unafraid to own up to moments of weakness or vanity, in a life full of accomplishments and achievements. He shares what he learned about leadership and personal responsibility, in such a way that it can be applied to any of us. Regardless of ones interest in flying or even Israeli politics and history, this is the compelling story of a man struggling to do his best.

A candid look at the IAF through the eyes of its 2nd highest Mig killer

I must say that this book is not your average "there I was..." autobiography. While Iftach Spector still is the IAF's second highest Mig killer, behind only Giora Epstein, he focuses his narrative on the challenges the state of Israel and the IDF faced in defending their fledging nation, at a time of great strife.

The narrative is very remarcable in the sense that fighter pilots usually focus their remarks on the cockpit, the squadron and the mission. Not so with general Spector. He writes about the nation of Israel, the Kibutz, and the IAF's evolution from a small airforce to a world-renown fighting force. Perhaps the most refeshing thing about "Spike," is that his personal achievements are glossed-over in favor of keeping the focus of the story on the IDF as a whole.

This book is a true treasure of information on a rather unscrutable subject: the Israeli Air Force, its growth, training, pilots and its wars. He pulls no punches here. You'll read all about the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. General Spector shows remarcable moral integrity in bringing to the fore issues that cannot possibly be politically correct in his country or service.

A must read for spanking lovers

In "Over The Boss' Knee" we meet Tess who has been working for her boss as his secretary for roughly five years. After losing a big contract her boss needs relief and he decides to get that relief from Tess, offering her money to indulge his fetishes.

If you're a spanking enthusiast then you'll love this erotic read. It moves fast and there are numerous scenes to tantalize the readers. There's also an unexpected twist that caught me off guard, but it was an interesting twist and leaves the reader with a HFN ending. Overall, an interesting read.

Cute Book, but Not Entirely Accurate

With a 6 year old at home and a baby on the way I'm always on the look out for good picture books that we'll be able to read together both now and when the baby arrives. Because we are also a Christian family, finding books that teach kids about God is always a plus. For both of those reasons I was excited to learn about the Train `Em Up series and to have the opportunity to review Tell Me about Prayer.

The Train `Em Up Series, created by Stephen Elkins, uses train travel to take children on a journey to learn about a variety of theological concepts. The CD is filled with the same story as the book, but contains many fun songs performed by children. Tell Me About Prayer also comes with a sheet of stickers that little ones would enjoy.

My 6 year old and I read this book at bedtime the other night and while he enjoyed it, I do think it is a little young for him. This book talks to kids about what prayer is and even teaches them the Lord's prayer which is definitely beneficial for them to learn. I like that it tells kids that prayer is how they can talk to God but I didn't like some of the phrasing. The book tells kids that prayer is not a way to ask for what we want but is about trusting God to provide the us with what we need, which is not exactly true. Prayer is a way to deepen your personal relationship with God and while a big part of that is learning to depend on Him to provide us with what we need, this is also a way to ask for things that we want. The key to that is, in my opinion, realizing that what we want isn't always what is best for us so God doesn't always say yes.

This book is a great starting point for teaching kids about prayer and we will probably read it again with our baby when he is old enough, but I think it should be the beginning of a conversation with your kids not the whole story. Trusting God to provide what we need is not what prayer is, it is a by-product of a mature faith. Telling kids that they cannot ask God for things that they want through prayer seems to me to be prohibitive to their budding relationship with the Lord and may even make them not want to pray at all.

All in all, I think the idea behind this book is fantastic, but the execution is poor. I would still give the other books in the series a try though as they are cute with good illustrations and my son enjoyed reading this one.

Audience ~ Part of the Train ‘Em Up series, this paperback targets ages four to seven years old. Although it has some complicated wording, it may be best read by an adult to a beginner reader.

Contents ~ Inside the front jacket is a musical CD containing ten songs plus the read-out-loud story. One full-page of small stickers is at the beginning of the book. Seven chapters are included, containing words of three of the songs on the matching CD. Written out Bible verses are noted from the New Living Translation along with the NIV, CEV, ISB, ISV, and KJV versions. A prayer completes the book.

Author ~ In addition to writing many children’s books and songs, Stephen Elkins is a Grammy Award-nominated music producer. His deep voice is animated and cheerful on the CD.

Illustrator ~ The colorful designs by Zeglin and Taylor-Kielty cover the pages with dotted-eyed children and animals complimenting the storyline. Brightly colored backgrounds have blue, green, or white font wording that is easy to read.

Characters ~ Although there are no specific characters, many of the scenes depict young children, usually dressed in Biblical costumes. David from the Old Testament and Jesus are mentioned.

Description ~ Each book in the series has chapters titled: Now Leaving for Bible Land, Discovery Land, Story Junction, Bridge of Song, Learning Station, Decision Depot, and Prayer Place. As this one focuses on how to pray, it shows that by talking and listening to God, a best friend is available. Including the Lord’s Prayer, prayer is asking God for the things needed and thanking Him for providing them. Bible verses from I Samuel, Psalm, Proverbs, Matthew, John, and Philippians, I Thessalonians are added.

Pros ~ One of the highlights of the series is that the musical CD comes with complete train noises as “Conductor Steve” reads the book so one can follow along. Interjected are children’s energetic voices. The five question test titled, “What Have We Learned about Prayer,” reiterates what the reader has learned.

Cons ~ Only three of the songs on the CD are written out in the book so some may have to hear the songs often if they do not know the words. Some of the wording in the book may be too conceptual to a preschooler. The version of the Lord’s Prayer is not well-known and does not include the last verse.

Opinion ~ By teaching young ones that they have a personal relationship with God, prayer is encouraged. Even if the child does not comprehend he or she can talk to God instantly, the included CD with songs would be enjoyed by those who love songs about God.

Here’s what we loved about it:

1. A train conductor named Steve narrates the story. They just won over my son for sure! It’s complete with all the important train “noises” you would expect from a “choo-choo” adventure.

2. The overall concept of prayer is a difficult one for kids to understand but the book is broken down into simple explanations about what prayer is and what it’s for.

3. There is a sticker page. All kids love stickers. No more explanation needed!

4. My daughter is just now learning to read so listening to the words and following along in the book was an academic exercise in addition to a spiritual growth one.

5. In addition to the narration and music included in the book there are extra songs at the end that support the concept discussed.

6. Kids sing the words but I found myself impressed with the quality of the background music behind the words. Let’s just say with kids music, this isn’t always the case.

7. The Train ‘Em Up book series covers a variety of sometimes challenging topics on a kid’s level. Other topics include: Tell Me about the Bible, Salvation, Church, Baptism, Faith, Grace, and Praise & Worship.

8. The books are affordable. With each one priced at $5.00, these make fabulous birthday or Christmas gifts!

**I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars because the book talks about how prayer is not a way to ask God for things we want, but to trust him to give us what we need. While I understand the concept the author is trying to get across, the Bible clearly tells us to ask. Sometimes the answer is "no" or "not now" because it's not what's best for us in the long run, but still, we are definitely told to ask.

About the Author
Mike Press is Professor of Design Research and Head of the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Rachel Cooper is Professor of Design Management at the University of Salford where she is Director of the Adelphi Institute for Research into Creative Arts and Sciences. The authors collaborated previously in writing The Design Agenda: a guide to successful design management which is published in both English and Chinese. I thought I knew what Democracy was…

I am SO pleased that I’ve read this compelling book… and that I now UNDERSTAND the true meaning of “Democracy.”

The book covers the history of democracy from its roots in Hellenic Greece, through the Magna Carta 1215, up to today. Although it’s certainly not a novel, I found it as gripping as one. I had trouble putting it down (in order to get some sleep).

It took me time to read as I found I couldn’t simply skim through it. I NEEDED to read it ALL, and in detail. And I was rewarded for doing this.

Completing the reading of Democracy Defined: The Manifesto has opened my awareness dramatically. I can see that this is just the start of a very interesting journey for me.

The above summarizes my review. But, if you are interested in further detail, please read on.

After completing my read of Democracy Defined: The Manifesto, and giving the content much thought, I realised that my education has consisted mainly of propaganda (i.e. brainwashing), with very little true learning, and all usually for governmental ulterior motives. I’ve always known “deep down” that if I had a good basic understanding of any subject, that that subject would be a breeze. Seldom does the educational establishment (academia/whatever), or any other “approved” source, ever teach "understanding"… just formulae and stuff to remember for exams, then to forget forever unless it’s a subject you love or your work involves it. Hence our common cries of “What’s the meaning of life?” and “Why me?”

Now, having read the book, it’s easy to understand why there are certain things that I want to know but haven't quite been able to “grasp.” I’ve been programmed (i.e. brainwashed) to not grasp them!

Knowing that you’re a slave isn’t very pleasant. But once you understand “why” you’re a slave (the truth), the fog lifts, and you can start working towards freedom for yourself and everyone else.

This is a truly remarkable book that ALL politicians should be compelled to read.....and then to have to take an exam on its contents!

We are all walking headlong into a corporate fascist nightmare of Orwellian proportions because we have forgotten (or didn't know) our Common Law Trial by Jury constitution; the over-riding supremacy of the principles of Magna Carta 1215 over any Statute or Act passed by politicians; and that any sovereign nation has an absolute right to create, issue and control a debt-free and interest-free monetary system free from the usury-based central banking system which creates money completely out of thin air as debt.

This book is a must read for anyone who cares about democracy and our future!

Laborious read

As a psychologists who works with children on the autism spectrum in group therapy, I am a huge fan of Michelle Garcia Winner and I find her social-cognitive approach to be right on target. I have many of her books and I have attended her trainings. This book, however, was a big disappointment--not because of the thinking behind it, but because of its presentation. I find that the text is much too wordy and the illustrations, while cute, are sometimes confusing. I have tried to use this book in group but I find the children become bored quickly. When I use it, I usually edit it down, skip pages, and try to explain in my own words. I think Michelle would do well to hire a children's author who could present her concepts with much more creativity and much more concisely. What I do like about the book are the pages in the back which offer 3 lesson plans for parents or teachers to further teach social thinking.

Excellent language for teaching social skills!

I work with children and love this book! I think that it presents concepts behind social skills in non-judgmental, understandable language that kids remember and can relate to. I use it with kids with a wide variety of challenges, not exclusively autism spectrum. I do not find that children complain about this book nearly as much as others I've tried and often even LIKE this book! That said, I do break it into chunks rather than try to read through the whole book in one sitting. When we go to read our next chunk, I go from the beginning and paraphrase the parts we read before, encouraging the child to "fill in the blanks" for the parts they learned last time to reinforce the learning. It is repetitive, as some have said, but I believe that is intentional in order to help the concepts stick and I've never found this book to be overly repetitive to the point that it's grating.

Honestly, I was surprised to see so many mixed reviews since I love this book and I know for a fact that several of my co-workers routinely borrow it as well! I definitely recommend it for children who are struggling with social and/or behavioral challenges, especially higher functioning autism spectrum and ADHD diagnoses.

Core concepts are solid.

This book introduced a lot of core concepts needed to use the Superflex curriculum that Michelle Garcia Winner also developed. I am using a modified version of this curriculum to teach a social skills group with children with autism and Asperger's. This book was a bit wordy and complicated for my clients at times; however, the core concepts in the book are very good. Like I said, I modified the curriculum to suit my clients' needs. This book might be good for the educator to learn about the concepts so they can teach it more proficiently.
