Bill Walker has taught English as a Second Language for more than 20 years. He specializes in helping students learn vocabulary and improve their reading abilities. He is currently a senior instructor at the University of Oregon, USA, and he has also taught English in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Hurts so good

This book is perfect for those ESL students who need that "bump" into college. My high school ESL classes use this, and the kids scream in agony over the rigor involved with these vocabulary words. The best part is, it only hurts for a second. At least, that's what I tell them. haha. But on a serious note, this book is a huge blessing for my kids, even though it's difficult. We do a different word-set each week, and they usually get about half of them correct. I offer retakes every Wednesday, before every new test on Friday. They have responded, and they're taking initiative. I even had a kid say, "I saw this word in my honors class!" It's gratifying. If you want to pose a challenge that will push them to proficiency, hit them with this book.

Good resource

This book is a good resource for ESL teachers or students whose first language is not English and are going to attend college. The words are defined, used in sentences, matched with synonyms, and shown as collocations. A minor drawback is the definitions are specifically geared toward college students, so definitions of the words used in other settings are not included.

Academic English Vocabulary for International Students

This was a great book. I had my students use it for independent vocabulary study. The difference in their pre-term and post-term vocabulary tests was astounding. They enjoyed using the book, and it really helped them improve their vocabulary skills. I recommend this book!
