Women, Art, and Society (Fifth Edition) (World of Art), by Whitney Chadwick

The definitive work on the subject, mapping a complete history of women artists from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to today

This acclaimed study challenges the assumption that great women artists are exceptions to the rule who “transcended” their sex to produce major works of art. While acknowledging the many women whose contributions to visual culture have often been neglected, Whitney Chadwick’s survey reexamines the works themselves and the ways in which they have been perceived as marginal, often in direct reference to gender. This revised edition features a new final chapter that charts the evolution of feminist art history and pedagogy since the 1970s. It is brought up to date with discussions of some of the most significant women artists to have emerged in recent years, including Wangechi Mutu, Jenny Saville, and Teresa Margolles. 332 illustrations, 124 in color

Like many women artists of the time, Gentileschi and Sirani were the daughters of painters. Orazio Gentileschi was one of the most important of Caravaggio's followers; Giovanni Andrea Sirani a pupil and follower of Reni, and an artist of considerably less interest than his daughter. Gentileschi is the first woman artist in the history of Western art whose historical significance is unquestionable. In the case of Sirani, her early death has prevented a full evaluation of her career despite her evident fame during her life. Sirani's father took all of her income from a body of work which she herself, following a custom gaining favor during the seventeenth century, catalogued at 150 paintings, a figure now considered too low. Despite her catalogue, no monograph exists and her reputation has suffered from an over-attribution of inferior works in Reni's style to her.

Beautiful book, but overwrought
By Vanessa Sumner
I wanted to like this book, but I found it to be somewhat pretentious and hard to follow. Before the modern artists come into play, the book is much better and the author usually puts the art on the same page as the description of it. As the book gets into modern times, the author crams soooooooooooooooo many artists in that it is very difficult to read/understand/stay interested in it. I am a feminist senior with an excellent GPA and I was lost at times. Toward the second half, the art is not near the written descriptions, the author tries to describe art in words without photos and the author spends lots of time describing artists that are not shown in the book at all. I know that there may have been problems obtaining the rights to print some of the art that the author describes, but I found it frustating and distracting. Also, I'm sure that all the modern artists deserve recognition, but I felt that the sheer volume of names was overwhelming, especially when there was no visual to help cement the person in your mind. This is a visually beautiful book and is well written. I am going to keep it for reference. It is a good text book, but could use a little tweaking.

A Great Book, but Difficult to Follow
By Jen
I really enjoyed this book, but I found it incredibly difficult to follow. The book does a fantastic job at highlighting women artists from the beginning all the way to contemporary art from the more well known ones to the lesser known ones. This book is divided nicely into time periods and does a great job with the information. However, some parts of the book are choppy. The author likes to reference other scholarly works without providing much information on them assuming that you have read them before. This is definitely a book for someone who has more than a basic knowledge of art, as some concepts aren't really explained in the book. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons on this book and it is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about women artists throughout history.

Full of great information that's hidden behind needlessly cerebral art-speak
By Brooke
Ugh, this book is a slog. Full of great information that's hidden behind needlessly cerebral art-speak. Use this as a jumping-off point to do your own research using information that's able to be bitten off in chunks bigger than one or two sentences. Had this book had a better editor, it would have been great, but, unfortunately, I could hardly get through it.
