Wonderful Wisdom

Everything follows the same life-stages. Businesses, non-profits, para-church organizations, and even churches move along the same trajectory. Mark Driscoll simplifies this trajectory as Man, Mission, Movement, Monument. It always begins with a person. This person brings on others either through recruiting or conversion. As more join the original man, it becomes a mission. Missions become Movements as they expand beyond their small base - they reproduce leaders, small groups and even other churches. This is the healthiest stage. But, in time, these Movements can become Monuments. They exist in memory for what once was. Most of the people reminisce rather than change or adapt.

The transition stage from Movement to Monuments primarily involves the loss of outreach. People assume that they community knows all about their church. They assume that they gospel has been shared. Or, they isolate. People are content. They like the size, or the feel - so everything becomes closed. The very thing which gave the church life, is the first thing to go - outreach.

Kevin Harney wrote Organic Outreach with this sort of church in mind. They are the plateaued or declining church. Yet, there is no golden gun. So, why write this book? Rather than serving, primarily, as a 'how-to' manual, Organic Outreach is a diagnostic tool. He helps pastors and church leaders to reorient themselves and their ministries. I believe that he adds something that has been missing in previous books. He recognizes that true outreach occurs when the church loves the right things. Believers must love Jesus, the lost and the church. Without these, outreach may occur, but it is most likely infrequent or forced. This is what he recognizes as the 'Heart' of the church.

Next, he considers the 'Mind' of the church. How does the church think about these things? How can it be adjusted or changed? All is usually takes is a simple mind shift. It requires helping the body to see outreach differently; to see that it is a normal and essential part of life. The 'Hands' of the church is about serving the community. Find those places where people are already serving and leverage those to lead to outreach on a greater scale. Finally, the 'Mouth' of the church concerns the message that is preached. Effective outreach happens because the people are equipped.

The strength of this book is that it recognizes that there are no silver bullets. There are patterns and principles - but not guarantees. But, that's because God is not manipulated. He is honored when we honor him and do things the way his Word directs. Christ has been building his church on a simple message (Matt 16). One the world considers foolish (1 Cor 1.18), but it is the power of God (Rom 1.16). This book is a great reminder of the power of the gospel and the simple shifts we all need to make in order to lead our churches to faithful outreach and evangelism.

Think with me for a second. Is the following statement true of your church? “Churches invest an inordinate percentage of their time and finances in people who are already followers of Jesus.” True, isn’t it? Is it true of your church? Most churches pour the vast majority of their resources and time into taking care of the sheep.

So what?

Kevin Harney, author of Organic Outreach thinks we have a problem. “Not all of this is bad or wrong,” he’s quick to point out. But as a whole, we’re probably spending too much time and too much money on the already-disciples, forsaking the not-yet-disciples, those whom Jesus commanded us to reach with the good news. It’s not just a matter of the dollars and cents of the church budget. It’s a deeper issue that penetrates into very fabric of the church. Churches that lack outreach are churches that lack life.

Maybe it’s time to change this. Maybe it’s time to amp up your church’s outreach. Maybe it’s time to be more aggressive about the Great Commission. Maybe it’s time to get serious about reaching people who are living and dying, never being relentlessly pursued by passionate Christians, eager to share the life-changing message of Jesus. Maybe it’s time we focus on outreach.

What Organic Outreach Is All About

Harney’s book is a jarring wake-up call to do just that. It’s more than an alarm, though. Sure, our churches need to a wake up call, but we need more. That’s why Organic Outreach opens with a triumphant anthem trumpeting the glories of Christ’s church, and a motivating chorus that proclaims a theology of love—love for God, love for others, and love for the church. The book then moves into sketching out a blueprint of how outreach should look. In this section, the motivation turns practical, as Harney explains how outreach looks, works, and acts.

Outreach is a great concept, but without any practical tips, it dwindles into nothing more than just that—a concept, devoid of action. Within this practical section, don’t expect a seven-step, surefire way to firing up a languid congregation and win 4,000 converts by next Sunday. I hope your church does have 4,000 true converts by Sunday, but outreach isn’t the product of seven-steps. As Harney explains, outreach begins with loving God. “Without this, nothing else matters.” Organic outreach isn’t formulaic. Rather, it is a natural outflow of right theology, joined with right action.

Organic?

Just like outreach is a buzzword, so is organic. As a point of fact, you may even have eaten organic yogurt for breakfast this morning, especially if you’re a hipster. When coupled with “outreach,” the word “organic” goes beyond Whole Food and Trader Joe’s. “Organic” is the author’s way of describing how outreach goes “beyond pushpins and committees.” Instead, organic outreach “should flow naturally and freely from God into every level of your church ministry. From there, it should pour from your church into your community and the world.”

This type of outreach begins to make sense when you envision the final product. In this vision of an organically outreaching assembly, you see a church whose nursery workers are thinking, “outreach,” rather than exclusively focusing on disinfecting slobbery toys and sealing up soiled diapers. In this vision, you see a church treasurer who isn’t just tallying up offerings each Sunday. Rather, he is planning a free financial seminar for people in the church’s community. The New Mom’s committee is not just lining up house help for Brenda, the Sunday School teacher who just had twins. Instead, the committee is finding people to prepare some meals for Rhonda, an unemployed single mom of four who lives two doors down from the church. Is the vision beginning to flesh out in your mind? In the Organic Outreach model, “outreach” is no longer a buzzword. Nor is it just a committee project. Instead, it is the Jesus-focused, others-loving heartbeat of the entire church.

Harney’s one-liner explanation sums it up: “Organic outreach is a change in the culture of your entire church.”

Should you take several hours to read this book?

Reading a book takes a lot of time. You should know, however, that Organic Outreach is a mere 192 pages, and it goes quick. You can probably get through it in three or four hours. That investment of time may very well revolutionize your ministry.

If any one of these four points applies to you, you should read this book:

• You are involved in church leadership, want to be, or think you might someday.

• Your church could improve outreach, and better connect with its community.

• You care about lost souls, or at least want to.

• You are sometimes disappointed that you or your church isn’t doing more to reach others.

No, you won’t agree with every point that the author makes. (Show me a book, apart from Holy Bible, where this is true.) Nonetheless, you will undoubtedly learn, think, and grow as a result of reading it. Most likely, it will change you, and then even change your church.

The church does not engage in outreach for outreach’s sake. Nor do we perfunctorily tack on an “outreach” ministry because we kind of have to obey that Great Commission thingy. No indeed. We engage in outreach because we believe the gospel and act upon it. The gospel is “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16), motivating us to unashamed, unrelenting, unstoppable proclamation of this joyful message.

About the Author
Crispian Scully is a Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Oral Health-General Health; and is emeritus Professor at UCL. He is Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, Medicina Oral, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry.

Crispian Scully is Past-President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, European Association of Oral Medicine, British Society for Oral Medicine and British Society of Disability and Oral Health, he has served as Dean in Bristol and UCL; on the General Dental Council; on the Councils of the Royals colleges in Glasgow and Edinburgh; and on committees of NICE and CRUK, He has written and edited over 45 books, written over 150 book chapters and has over 1000 papers cited on MEDLINE. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, University of Granada Medal, Fellowship of UCL, and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada, Helsinki and Pretoria. He has received the UK Dental Award for the Most Outstanding Achievements in Dentistry, the Awards of the Spanish Society for Oral Medicine and the Hellenic Society for Oral Medicine, and the International Award of the Spanish Society for Oral Surgery.

Jose Bagan graduated in Medicine and Surgery at Valencia University, Spain, and then gained his PhD at Valencia University. He directs the Service of Stomatology at Valencia University General Hospital and is Full Professor of Oral Medicine at Valencia University. Jose is President of the European Association of Oral Medicine and President of the Research Commission, Valencia University General Hospital. He is Director of the journal Medicina Oral, Patolog�a Oral y Cirug�a Bucal, and Associate Editor of the journal Oral Diseases as well as being on several other Editorial Boards. Jose is the author of 10 books, 33 book chapters, and over 310 published papers in oral medicine. He has been awarded 20 prizes in odontostomatology.

Marco Carrozzo is Professor of Oral Medicine, School of Dental Sciences and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine, RVI Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Marco graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Turin, Italy, and specialized in odontostomatology, becoming researcher and Consultant in Oral Medicine at the University of Turin. He is author and co-author of over 180 scientific publications including several papers on oral cancer and potentially malignant diseases and of three books and nine book chapters on oral medicine. Catherine Flaitz is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Pediatric Dentistry, former Dean at The University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch at Houston and the holder of the William N. Finnegan III Professorship in the Dental Sciences. Some of her honours include the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Education Foundation Research Award, American Society of Dentistry for Children Foundation Journalism Award and the 2001 George W. Teuscher Silver Pen Award. Dr Flaitz was the first dental educator to receive the UT-Houston President’s Scholar Award for Teaching Excellence. She has a special interest in the diagnosis and novel management of oral lesions in children and immunocompromised individuals of all ages.

Sergio Gandolfo is Full Professor of Dentistry at the University of Turin, School of Medicine S. Luigi Gonzaga. He earned his medical degree in 1977 and completed postgraduate training in stomatology (1980) and medical oncology (1983) at the University of Turin. Currently, Professor Gandolfo is Head of the Department of Dentistry at the S. Luigi University Hospital, Orbassano, Turin, and is also Dean of the Postgraduate School in Oral Surgery and the Master in Oral Medicine and Special Needs Care at the University of Torino. From 2005 to 2008 he was Dean of the Degree Course in Oral Hygiene (University of Torino).

Professor Gandolfo is past-President and founding fellow of the Italian Society of Oral Pathology and Medicine (SIPMO), and a member of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO), the International Association of Oral Pathologist (IAOP) and the European Academy of Oral Medicine (EAOM). He currently serves on the Scientific Committee of the Association for Prevention and Care of Cancer in Piedmont.

Romance no.. Brilliant yes

This review is hard for me because I have a love hate relationship with this book. The story writting was great at times almost brilliant. But in the end I hated the book because i bought this book expecting a romance story. There is nothing romantic about it and considering that is what i wanted I really wanted to throw my kindle when I was done. I won't reash the synopsis. Caleb is a unfaithful manwhore...who is not what he seems and he is a con artist who uses people/women. Never believe anything he says.

Even though i gave the book a low rating, had it been listed in a different genre...mystery and not romance I probably would of given it 5 stars.

Caleb is definitely most women’s nightmare when it comes to an arrogant personality of one that thinks he is all that and owed by most women. And as it has been stated, he is the bad boy everyone loves to hate. But how many true Caleb’s are out there and play the field as he does and get by with it? More than we would like to admit.
Caleb owns his own company and looks at woman as his next score. He is stringing 3 along at this time and his time for his secret little rendezvous is coming to an end.
His live in girlfriend, Sarah is in the dark on his indiscretions until she comes across an email that gives her the opportunity to find out what he has been doing all along. Discovering his true self, Sarah calls him out on all of it and leaves him. In his despair, he’s driving and has an accident causing him to have memory loss.
Has Caleb changed from the person he used to be and is this memory loss a blessing for a new beginning for Sarah?
I think Ms. McNeil hit this one perfectly. I hate the man but Ms. McNeil wrote this so well, she deserves the rating she got from me.

Intense!

Caleb is a Man-Ho nothing good to say about him, well maybe his Cabinets are Exquisite. He is in a dysfunctional relationship and yes he is a major reason for that and is it really worth it tho? Yes. Caleb want's a women at the times he wants and that is all the time. He is about to be brought down quite a few pegs tho!

I was given this book for an honest review. So here it goes, I loved it! Yes we all have known man-ho's and wanted them brought down. The POV of Caleb really got to me, no I never felt sorry for him just glad when he got his ass handed to him. I cheered of course, I know bad me but oh did he deserve it! I can tell you the ending was way out of left field and I loved it! I really like when an Aurthur can throw me a curve ball! I can't wait to read Caleb 2!

About the Author

Rod Hill grew up in Ontario, was educated at the University of Toronto, University of Stockholm and the University of Western Ontario where he obtained a PhD in Economics. He has taught at the University of Windsor, University of Regina and the University of New Brunswick, where he has been a Professor of Economics since 2003. His research interests have included international trade policy, taxation and the underground economy, and (as a result of growing dissatisfaction) the content of the introductory textbooks. He's a member of Economists for Peace and Security and the Progressive Economics Forum.

Tony Myatt received his PhD from McMaster University with distinction in theory. He has taught at McMaster University, Western University, Nipissing University College, the University of Toronto, and the University of New Brunswick, where he has been Professor of Economics since 1992. His research interests have included the supply-side effects of interest rates, labour market discrimination, unemployment rate disparities, and the methods and content of economic education. His interest in textbooks stems from re-evaluating what is typically taught at the introductory level. As a result, he has developed several different introductory courses as vehicles for teaching principles of economics, including Economics of Everyday Life, Economics in the Real World, and Economics Through Film. Professor Myatt was the recipient of UNB's Arts Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008.

Textbook Economics:Text and Anti-text

Hill and Myatt's anti-textook is an easy to read, well organised critique of textbook micro-economics that can be read alongside any standard textboook as it parallels their structure and topics. It is more a series of explorations than a coherent critique launched from one theoretical perspective; nevertheless, it exposes the limitations of modern economics well. It deserves a most careful reading and comparison with other credible studies of economics listed below.

It is similar to, but more direct and simpler to read than Steve Keen's Debunking Economics second edition, which taken overall is more comprehensive and a deeper more cogent critique. Both are essential to help grasp the weakness of positivist economics.

But, I would like to recommend a book that penetrates more deeply into the political and economic philosophy behind the modern "science" of economics by examining Hobbes, Locke, Smith, Marshall, Keynes, Hayek, Myrdal, and Rational Expectations Economics. That book is "Deductive Irrationality. A Commonsense Critique of Economic Rationalism" 073911624X) by Stephen McCarthy and David Kehl based on the teaching and writings of Dr. Richard W. Staveley here in Brisbane, Australia from the 1960s to the end of the last century.

I have never taken even a basic course in economics, and yet I have become quite interested in the subject and I want to be able to follow the current events in the economy with some level of understanding. So I have been reading quite a few books about the economic crisis of 2008 and following, and I read Paul Krugman's blog in the NY Times. And I invested in this book to get a better fundamental understanding of how economics works as a subject. It was a very worthwhile investment.

Each chapter begins with an overview of what mainstream texts teach, and that was not always easy for me to understand. But I did my best, and I have at least a nodding acquaintance with what a person learns in a microeconomics course. But more importantly, this book then presents the Anti-Text discussion and analysis of the weaknesses and assumptions that underlie mainstream economics.

One of the key points that impressed me is how models are used. Economics is based heavily on charts and equations that simplify reality in order to deal with it abstractly. The trick, as the authors explain it, is that a model is supposed to be judged by how accurately it predicts reality. Yet what happens in practice is that models are taken as proof, rather than as testable hypotheses. Models are not supported by evidence from the real world, but by imaginary examples from a vastly over-simplified world in which decisions are made by hyper-rational beings who bear little resemblance to actual humans.

They further argue that real world factors such as unequal access to information and vastly unequal access to power are brushed aside and written out of the models. So when a worker interacts with a corporation, the assumption is that each is a totally free agent who can enter or leave the market at will, so if a corporation decides to move their production out of a community, the workers equally have the freedom to sell their labor elsewhere, without taking any account of the real-life ties that an individual worker may have, such as an underwater mortgage and kids in a local school. The power that corporations have in making laws that favor them is also written out of the standard textbook.

Economics concerns itself almost exclusively with what it refers to as "efficiency," and very little with issues of "equity," which means not equality of outcome, as those who fling "socialism" around as an epithet claim, but with basic fairness in how a society's resources are allocated. Matters such as externalities, while touched upon, are downplayed.

An interesting example is the Pareto Principle, which states that "society" is better off if someone becomes better off without anyone else becoming worse off. This seems to be almost a truism, until the actual application of it is considered. Imagine a community in which 100 people each earn $100 a week, and then suddenly, one member of the community finds oil under his property, and begins to earn $1 million a week, while the other 99 continue to earn $100 a week. All to the good, right? But out here in the real world, human beings have an innate sense that it is unfair for one member of the group (or even half of the group) to be given benefits that the rest do not share in. In fact, this sense of fairness is observed not only in young children but even in other primates. Did the people earning $100 become worse off when their neighbor suddenly struck it rich? Not in any absolute sense. But they were comparatively worse off than before, because they now lived in a world in which they were noticeably poorer than one person, whose sudden wealth came to him purely by luck. (If you give one kid in the class a candy bar, and nothing to the rest of the class, the Pareto Principle would say that this is a net gain for the class. Is it?)

If you don't like this example (which is mine, not the authors') consider this one: 10 people are in a bar. In walks Bill Gates. The average wealth of the people in the bar is now in the millions of dollars. But how does that matter? This, in effect, is how the wealth of a nation is measured. If the average is higher, then society is doing well. But society is made up of individuals who may not participate in this average at all.

In fact, examples like this make one wonder whether economists have ever met any real people, since they seem to have so little interest in or understanding of actual human emotions and reactions. The Efficient Market Hypothesis is just one of many examples in which an idealized model works about like cold fusion--it's a beautiful idea, but it doesn't match up very well with cold hard reality. The EMH basically claims that the price is always right. If a 2 bedroom house in the Califonria desert is sold for $800,0000, well that's what it's worth, there is no other price, and a bubble can't possibly exist.

Anyhow, all in all, a well-written, clear, and very informative and insightful book. I will be re-reading it again from time to time to deepen my understanding of how economics does, and doesn't work.
