This is a fantastic book. There are two points that I particularly ...

This is a fantastic book. There are two points that I particularly appreciate:

1. The author presents great suggestions for practicing; something lacking in many other books I've read. For example, right away your presented with five different fingers (patterns) for playing scales and several different melodic exercises to engage with these patterns. Right away he suggests that it's probably better to learn to play the first melodic exercise in a five patterns rather than learning all the exercises in one fingering, and moving on to the next. I really appreciate that.
2. The author doesn't just push a system on you; he discusses different systems, the pros and cons of each and then goes on to discuss why he has his chosen favorites. Again, I appreciate that.

Finally, there's a lot of work in here... it might seem overwhelming at first, but he does present this material in a very manageable manner. Read his suggestions; follow them and you'll be one happy customer.

Figuring out the rest on your own is excellent practice, but I'd like to at least go ...

I have a lot of guitar books and have taken a lot of lessons. The first few pages of this book did more to help me see the fretboard as a whole than anything else I've done in the last 20 years. The exercises really bring the CAGED system into the real musical world and keep you from getting bogged down with memorization. My only criticism is that the author saved space by only partially printing exercises. Figuring out the rest on your own is excellent practice, but I'd like to at least go online to make sure I'm doing them correctly.

Rather dry and boring. However

It's a hard book to read. Rather dry and boring. However, though it's not any fault of the book, we're having to read it for a 'second language acquisition' class, and I'm not sure why. How very young children learn their native language is not entirely the same process as how an older person learns a second language. So, to use this book in a class for teaching 2nd language acquisition is sort of silly.

The book is highly informative and breaks down the acquisition of language into really nice parts, such as: acquisition of phonology, acquisition of morphology, acquisition of syntax, and acquisition of semantics. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because it's a very slow and honestly boring read, the author also repeats themselves a lot and speaks in circles in the beginning chapters, to the point of being irritating.
So my suggestion is to read chapter one skip the next few chapters then focus on the really nicely organized acquisition chapters towards the middle and end.
Overall, it is an extremely helpful book when looking into how a child acquires their first language.

Educated in chemistry and biochemical imbalances and recovered from a horrendous case of altered mental status, I knew what to look for regarding "mental illness." Most psychiatric patients have abnormal lab test results, but they don't know it. Unable to pinpoint the cause of abnormal lab results, doctors commonly diagnose ADHD or a mental disorder. But an abnormal lab result means that a person is suffering from an abnormal physical state. The altered physical state can change mental status. Caffeine allergy, caffeine poisoning, and adrenaline allergy and poisoning, all hidden conditions, all discussed in my book, change normal brain function.

Excellent information on a secret world wide epidemic!

This is an excellent book! There is so much described here which I can immediately relate to. I had eliminated caffeine from my diet a few weeks prior to a internet search revealing this book. It confirms many issues which my doctor left unanswered. I had previously asked him if there was such a thing as caffeine allergy, and he replied,"No". I still knew there was something about caffeine. Why did soft drink manufacturers substitute cocaine with caffeine? Why do they put it there in the first place? Because it is an addictive drug which keeps you coming back for more, much like cigarettes and other "hard drugs". What makes a drug "hard" anyway? Is it because it is way too obvious to slip past most people? Just a few things do think about while you wait for your copy to arrive!

Such a good book!!!

This book is so so good. I am allergic to caffeine and this book is so informative. It's also so great to know that other people have been though what I have. Most people have no idea what it is like to have a caffeine allergy...for awhile I really thought I might be going crazy. I've been caffeine free for almost two years and can't believe how different mentally and physically I am. If you think you might have an allergy or just want to learn a little more about mental disorders (and the potential cause behind them) this is the book for you!

Useful, but not for novices

This book is up-to-date, nicely organized, and full of useful information. It is intended to be of value to readers who have some general programming experience and is, by extension, ideal for those who already have some knowledge of SAS programming. My only complaint, and it is not an insignificant one, is that the writing is often unclear. I find too many passages that I understand only because I know quite a bit about SAS already. I fear that other readers with less experience will end up puzzled or misinformed. This is a good SAS book, but it is not a good "first" SAS book.

Not bad, but definitely not good either

The book is useful if you are not new to SAS, however there are definitely better written books available. Comparing a code (given as example) and its output are often hard to follow as the text says nothing about the data file structure. The spelling errors (admittedly few) are very annoying. One doesn't expect them in professionally written text.

My 7 year old couldn't put this book down. There were some words that were above his reading level, but I like that this challenged him yet he was still able to read the book. He's already reading it for the second time. If you liked the movie, you'll like the book.

Before seeing the movie, or after, read the book and have a nice conversation with your kids about emotions and how they work.

Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out takes you to a place that everyone knows but no one has ever seen, inside the human mind. All the emotions that run wild inside all of us and what happens when each different one takes control.

I read this with my almost five year old. He is very advanced with reading and it was great for the two of us to enjoy together. We went back and forth, I would read some and then he would read. Overall it was not a problem for him to read, a few words here and there he needed help with but it was well written and not above his head. We read it before going to see the movie so he would have an idea what it was about. The story did a great job setting everything up and relaying the information in an appropriate way for the young audience.

The chapters were short and not overwhelming. Each chapter was accompanied by illustrations of the emotions and characters along with pictures from the movie halfway through the book.

Overall it was a great book and I enjoyed being able to talk to my son about the emotions and how we express them and can let them affect us in all different ways. Having a face to put with the emotions helped him understand what we are talking about when something is going on and how we can let the right emotion take the controls and steer us in the right direction.

I highly recommend reading this book with your kids before seeing the movie, or after and talking with them.

I bought this for my 7y.o daughter. She really enjoyed the movie. this book is a great novelization! My daughter enjoys reading this book and often takes it to bed with her.

Be aware that if you are looking for a picture book, you may be disappointed. This book is a chapter book with only a few pictures in the center of the book.

About the Author
Gustave LeBon (1841-1931) was a French physician who wrote widely on scientific subjects, including anatomy and physiology, anthropology, and history. Many of his writings focused in particular on national traits, crowd behavior, and racial superiority. His numerous books include The Civilization of Arabs, The Psychology of Peoples, and The Crowd.

Read it now!!

I just finished this book for the second time. Each time I've read this was while a Presidential Election season (2008 & 2012) was underway. Although the book was written 116 years ago in 1896, the author, Gustave Le Bon, was obviously a brilliant mind with a mastery of his subject and the ability and dedication needed to produce a concise and systematic study of the psychology and persuasion of the popular mind.

I can't praise the author enough. This is classic literature and poetry. It is a brilliant analysis of a timeless subject made before certain conventional wisdoms of psychology had even been firmly established. And it makes accommodations for predictable variability's in human behavior, which makes this book accessible to future generations and as timeless as the subject it studies.

It's as if the Obama Campaign has implemented this book's instructions perfectly. For example, the book, among other things, instructs the following:

"The possession of prestige does not suffice, however, to assure the success of a candidate. The electors tickles in particular for the flattery of his greed and vanity. He must be overwhelmed with the most extravagant blandishments, and there must be no hesitation in making him the most fantastic promises. If he is a working man it is impossible to go too far in insulting and stigmatising employers of labour. As for the rival candidate, an effort must be made to destroy his chance by establishing by dint of
affirmation, repetition, and contagion that he is an arrant scoundrel, and that it is a matter of common knowledge that he has been guilty of several crimes...."

"The candidate's written programme should not be too categorical, since later on his adversaries might bring it up against him; in his verbal programme, however, there cannot be too much exaggeration. The most important reforms may be fearlessly promised. At the moment they are made these exaggerations produce a great effect, and they are not binding for the future, it being a matter of constant observation that the elector never troubles himself to know how far the candidate he has returned has followed out the electoral programme he applauded, and in virtue of which the election was supposed to have been secured...".

"The candidate who hits on a new formula as devoid as possible of precise meaning, and apt in consequence to flatter the most varied aspirations, infallibly obtains a success...."

The ONLY negatives--and I feel finding some potential flaw is obligatory--would a somewhat bigoted bias of the writer as well as the inconvenience of the book being over 100 years old. On the latter point, I've already said, the author was brilliant enough and the subject timeless enough that the book basically time a particular place in time.

On the former point, he made a couple of questionable assertions such as women and children are inferior. Well, it is nice to at least get a look at a time before political correctness has overtaken a subject so that we could consider the question that existed before the question itself was eliminated by the power political correctness.

Most people would balk at that assertion without even thinking about it. Myself, on the other hand, would say that we he is implicitly suggesting here is that he doesn't value an emotionally biased person as much as a rationality biased person.

In this sense at least, his assertion is logical and a statement of opinion to which he's entitled. However, I disagree and believe people who are more emotional may be taken for granted more, which doesn't mean that aren't as important.

Otherwise, read this book and read it now while the questions it addresses are most relevant to the present.

Interesting but frustrating

This is a classic work on crowds, but it suffers from the author never giving a real explanation of what a crowd is. His observations about how a crowd acts take the place of a definition. There are some very interesting observations and the book is worth looking through. But I wouldn't recommend it as something to study.

Governing politically or managerially of a crowd is best done by the art of illusion and managed perception. I have not read a book so painfully good at identifying the collective stupidity of the crowd. The ideals we individually hold dear can be silenced. Ideas of truth can be manufactured. This is a great book on the manipulation of crowds to believe and do what is against their interests.

After three "accidental" deaths early in the running of the torturous Iditarod Trail (from Anchorage to Nome) dog sled race, Alaskan police and race officials step up efforts to prevent further mayhem. State trooper Alex Jensen, single, brooding, handsome, and adept with physical evidence, falls upon the puzzling events with relish, comparing lists, visiting checkpoints, searching sled cargoes, etc. Consulting with race participant Jessie Arnold, he learns some of the inside facts, experiences delaying blizzards, and becomes emotionally attached. Incredible descriptions of scenery, in-depth knowledge of the sport, glimpses of life in the Alaskan hinterland, and incipient romance all contribute to an absorbing read.

Unpredictable Race Produces Predictable Murderer

Sue Henry's entry into the murder mystery market gets four stars for predictability. The fast moving plot keeps the reader hooked even though the outcome is obvious rather early on. The culprit's behavior leads to a logical conclusion. Henry's strength lies in her knowledge of the Iditarod race, an Iconic Alaska sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome each March. The grueling contest pits mushers, dogs, and sleds against some of the worst weather conditions on the planet for the 1049-mile run, making it a great who dun it backdrop. The murderer had plenty of opportunity and any number of possible motives based on the race dynamics alone. Henry missed the boat, or, in this case the sled, by doing such a predictable job on her hatchet man. Having read all of her books, this time a reread for a book club review, I will not reveal the direction Henry takes with her series, other than to say they are not all this predictable. It is still a good read and one the Iditarod Trail Committee touts as a great book for race enthusiasts because of accurate representation of the race course and the mechanics of running it. I would like to have seen more mention of the history behind it and of Ray Redington, the Alaskn responsible for reviving the modern race and extremely important to anyone running the race.

Hard Times Charles Dickens Hard Times – For These Times (commonly known as Hard Times) is the tenth novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1854. The book appraises English society and highlights the social and economic pressures of the times. The novel was published as a serial in Dickens's weekly publication, Household Words. Sales were highly responsive and encouraging for Dickens who remarked that he was "Three parts mad, and the fourth delirious, with perpetual rushing at Hard Times". The novel was serialised, in twenty weekly parts, between 1 April and 12 August 1854. It sold well, and a complete volume was published in August, totalling 110,000 words. Another related novel, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, was also published in this magazine.
