Important book to be read by anyone in software development
By Ben Rothke
At the beginning of chapter 3 of Engineering Safe and Secure Software Systems, author Warren Axelrod (full disclosure: Warren is a friend of mine) quotes two experts who observe that "software engineering is still an oxymoron" and "software engineering, as originally envisioned, does not yet exist". With such a stipulation it would seem there is little value in writing (and reading) such a book.
Notwithstanding the existing difficulties, Engineering Safe and Secure Software Systems is a valuable book in that it tackles both the topics of software safety and security.
The book notes the difference between the two is that safety-critical software is that where the software must not harm the world; and security-critical software is that where the world must not harm the software. That difference is significant and not simply that of semantics.
As so many cars, refrigerators, defibrillators and everything in between have or will shortly have IP addresses; the effective and secure design of software systems is an imperative.
One area where noted security researcher Barnaby Jack was pursuing before his untimely death was software exploits in medical devices.
Earlier this year in fact, the FDA sent a report to medical tech manufacturers warning against backdoors in their systems. The FDA notified them of security flaws that could allow an attacker access to the internals of the systems that could results in life-ending conditions. These are the types of crucial issues that the books details and suggests methods in which to secure.
While it is under 250 pages, the book though is an extremely concentrated book that contains a wealth of valuable information.
Engineering Safe and Secure Software Systems is an important book that should be read by anyone in software development. Especially those looking to ensure that the code they develop is both safe and secure, and the ensuring software does not kill anyone.

Excellent guide for anyone involved in developing and deploying secure software solutions and systems
By Roger Lang
I found this book to be very readable, accessible, and enlightening. Warren Axelrod leverages his wealth of experience to clearly position software assurance and systems security challenges that we face while laying out a preferred approach. Along the way he puts into context the many cross-industry, academic and government initiatives in this space. With all of the current attention on security breaches this book by a highly respected industry thought leader and former CISO is a must read for anyone involved in the development and deployment of secure software solutions and systems.

A UNIQUE SECURITY AND SAFETY RESOURCE!!
By COSMIC TRAVELER
Are you a security and safety professional? If you are, then this book is for you. Author C. Warren Axelrod (Author) has done an outstanding job of writing a book that focuses on reducing the huge gap that exists between the software safety and security engineering fields.
Author Axelrod, begins by showing you how to work with a specific hierarchy of terms in order to facilitate more meaningful definitions that he uses throughout the book. Next, the author considers what constitutes software systems engineering, which is considered by some to be a major source of deficiencies in modern information-technology and automated control systems. Then, he shows you how to create a model of safety-critical and security-critical systems. In addition, the author traces the history of various branches of engineering. He continues by examining the risk assessment and management processes, taking into account the many definitions and models that are offered. The author then defines careful measurements and metrics and notes the differences between them. Next, he examines the software system development processes in great detail. Then, he examines the phases and detailed tasks and subtasks that are most crucial to developing, operating and decommissioning secure software systems. In addition, he shows you why those who design and develop safety-critical software systems have a very different perspective in regard to the various phases of the SSDLC. Finally, the author shows you how to create safer and more secure software systems using justifications based on behavioral economics, rather than on some general sense that is a good thing to do.
This most excellent book addresses real issues and impediments to the development and operation of safe and secure mission-critical, software-intensive systems. Furthermore, it is the mission of this great book to focus on the neglected aspects of software systems engineering that stand a chance of one making a material improvement in the state of software, a state that currently is deteriorating rapidly. Finally, while the focus of this fantastic book is on software systems, there is an increasing interest in the need for codesigning applications and related systems, particularly for high-performance computing.
