Nice Content, Terrible Readers

The content of this novel is moderately interesting and appears to be well written. This review, however, is of the Audio CD edition, and it has huge problems. The original material was written in English. Why, then, do we have readers who cannot pronounce modern English, neither British nor American modern English. We get a steady stream of strange vowel sounds. We get a reader who cannot pronounce the letter r and whose t's and th's are murder (the word "third" comes out "turd"). There is absolutely no reason why an English novel should not or cannot be read by a native English speaker or at least a reader who can pronounce English somewhat correctly. The content is often obscured on these CDs by outrageous mispronunciations to the point that I strongly recommend you avoid the Audio CD edition.

The Fragile Webs that Connect Us

After reading Hosseini"s first two books, which were mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night-and-finish heart stoppers, This was a complete change of pace, which kind of took me by surprise. But I loved it. About halfway through I felt I was missing connections, so I stopped and made a diagram of the characters, where they were at each point in the book (Paris, Afghanistan, the US, Greece...), and how they were connected to the others, if they were. I'd advise doing that from the start, and paying a lot of attention to detail, because some of it will catch you unawares, "years later" in the narrative. The book is a lot like life--small decisions sometimes have huge consequences, big decisions may not have that great an effect, deciding against your conscience will likely lead down a path you wish you'd never started on. And lastly, even when things don't turn out perfectly, as they usually don't, there is still purpose, joy and even some magic in life.

And the Mountains Echoed but there were too many voices to hear...

Lovingly written but very involved story about the loyalty of one's heart. It is a beautifully described story of love and devotion, what makes our heart care or in some cases not care at all. There are many siblings, cousins, father daughter relationships, couples, and friends, and each relationship is picked apart. The heart wrenching sacrifice of one child to save the rest, the growing devotion between servant and master, the ability to connect with a stranger and then take on the burden of a person to love as though they were a part of you. Hosseini expertly explores all kinds of relationships, hitting emotional cords in his vibrant and deep descriptions. However, there were just too many relationships that were somehow loosely connected, stretching the plot until it became paper thin. The descriptions of Pari and her brother were wonderful, the rivalry between sibling sisters amazing, the competition between two opposite cousins intriguing, mother-daughter conflicting- each few sections explored a new set of people, but they had such a slim connection, that the whole theme was smothered by far reaching details. Hosseini captures people and the gritty atmosphere of war torn and poverty stricken Afghan. Any one of the stories would have made an terrific book, but the sheer weight of so many drown the story lines.
